“We’re hoping for some success at
Stone Mountain.” said Allen. “Our
wrestlers (varsity and junior varsity)
have a chance to make something
good happen.”
True to his words, good things have
already begun to happen. The fourth
place trophy was the first trophy ever
won by a South Forsyth junior varsity
or varsity wrestling team. The 1992
finish was considerably better than
the 1991 team, which wound up last in
the standings.
McEeachem won the event, scoring
215 points. Wheeler, with 182 and
Fayette County, with 161, was third.
South Forsyth rounded out the top
four, scoring 96 points.
“They did great,” said Elliott, talk
ing about his team. “They took on
some big teams.”
Allen was equally supportive of the
War Eagle junior varsity.
“They took on, and beat, a lot of
AAAA wrestling teams,” said Allen.
“And that’s something you have to
give them credit for.”
South Forsyth brought home some
individual medals to match their
fourth place hardware. J. J. Gaines
and Shannon Stancil were each
crowned champion in their respec
tive weight divisions.
Gaines scored a victory in the 112-
pound division, when he dealt
Fayette County’s A. J. Argentina a 5-2
loss. Gaines was undefeated (4-0) for
the day. Ben Brookshire of Mclntosh
beat Sundance Vandezande of
Wheeler for third place.
Stancil won the 119-pound class,
when he pinned Ben Magus, also rep
resenting Fayette County. Stancil
pinned Magus in the second period.
Third place went to Heritage’s Will
Herman, who defeated Phil Embry of
McEachem. Forsyth Central’s Jona
than Stieglitz finished with a 2-2 re
■ord at 119, a mark which would have
amed him fifth place in the division.
“He did real well,” said Forsyth
Central coach Nelson Hall.

time junior varsity champion, was 29-

South Forsyth’s Chris Sams was an
other big point winner, as he placed
fourth in the heavyweight division.
Sams lost in a battle for third when
Wheeler’s Bill Farmhand won via a
pin.
South’s Joe Fish at 103, while not
placing in the top four, earned his
school more recognition by winning
three matches.
“If they’d have given five places he
(Fish) would have finished fifth,” said
Allen.
There were other individual weight
division champions. At 125, McEa
chem’s Sam Brown beat Pope’s Jim
Wolma. The 130-pound division title
went to Wheeler’s Mike Edwards, who
defeated Gary Hart of McEachem.
The 135-pound championship was
won by James McFarland of Wheeler,
who beat McEachern’s John Hol
comb. Riverside Military Academy
won a title in the 140-pound division,
as he beat Rick Harris of Fayette
County. Forsyth Central’s Joe Criddle
was successful in that weight division,
as he captured one match at 140.
At 152, Bill Grzesik of Rockdale
County beat Mike Gamble from Pope.
McEachem’s David Michael captured
the 160-pound division, when he de
feated Wheeler’s Yori Masudaof.
Continuing on, Sprayberry’s Dan
Eastland won the 171-pound title
when he won over Richard Smith of
Heritage. Tom O’Neal won Wheeler a
title when he beat Lassiter’s A 1 Brady
for the 189 title.
The heavyweight first place medal
went to Chris Anderson of Fayette
County, who beat McEachem’s Larry
Wilson.
Originally, there were 16 teams in
the format, but Lithia Springs and
Harrison, a new school from Cobb
County, were no-shows.

The team’s magic includes winning
with two original starters, Julie Car
nes and Kristi Watson, both out for
the season with knee injuries.
“Considering what we've been
through, we’ve done well,” said
Cauley.
Players Kris Adams (13.5), Neva
Gravitt (13.2), Kristi Watson (9.5) and
Melanie Gault (9.1) have averaged
enough points to take up the slack.
“It seems a different player, in a
different category (points, rebound
ing, assists, etc.) has picked us up in
each game,” said Cauley. “This team,
as a whole, is playing together. They
are very coachable. They listen and
pay attention to instruction, then they
go out and execute what you’ve
talked about”

“We’ve got to play better defense,
hustle more than the other team, in
order to win,” said Smith. “We have
to find solutions to problems, we
need to play harder and smarter.
These little things, like taking a
charge or watching the back side on
defense, are what enables us to win.”
Cauley summed up the season so
far. 1
“Win, lose or draw, this group has
made it fun for a coach,” he said. “I
know they are giving it their best” *
So far, winning has taken a front
seat to a season both coaches hope
will have some additional games.
“We’re working toward that goal,”
said Smith. “We want to win some
(tournament) games in front of our
fans at home.”
