Not buying American does not
make the consumer responsible
Just about everywhere you look
these days, you can see a commercial
or an advertisement that shouts, “buy
American, buy American.”
Now I like to buy American. I like
the thought of buying American. But,
as a consumer, I’d like to make a few
requests to whomever it is, the powers
that be, that would like for the Ameri
can public to buy American.
1. QUALITY. I don’t have enough
fingers and toes to use to count up how
many shirts I have purchased that
stated “Made in America.” Nice
shirts. Yet, the first time I wear these
shirts, the buttons pop off. And it isn’t
because they are too small, either! It’s
because they weren’t sewn on
properly.
I have made it a habit to reinforce
the buttons before I wear the shirt
Clothing isn’t the only thing that
shows up with poor quality. Let’s dis
cuss cars, shall we?
Overall, automobiles just aren’t
made like they used to be. Now they
are made with fiberglass and some of
them are even made with plastic. (One
American-made car in particular has
side panels, hood, and trunk that are
made of plastic.) Now I ask you, what
happens to one of these cars when it is
broadsided by an older model car.
You know, the ones that are made
with real metal? I’ll tell you what hap
pens to it. It crumples up like a styro
foam cup that’s been stepped on. This
is not quality. This is not safety. This
isn’t even smart. This is dangerous.
This is suicide!
2. AFFORDABILITY. Oh, yes, let’s
talk about affordability, shall we?
Whether or not it is realized or ac-

knowledged, there are quite a few un
fortunate Americans who do not make
$30,000 in a year’s time. Some of us
don’t even make $20,000. There are
those of us who cannot put down $25
for a pair of jeans or buy a $16,000 car.
So what do we do? That’s right. Some
ofthose imported products are cheap
er than those with that “Made in
America” label and that’s what we
have to buy.
Supposedly, it’s cheaper to make
American products in Taiwan, or Ko
rea or Japan. How can it possibly be
cheaper? When you consider the
transportation costs, how can it possi
bly be cheaper? Good grief, those peo
ple in Taiwan or Korea or Japan that
are making our products must be get
ting paid dirt Literally.
3. KEEP IT AT HOME. Does any
one have any idea how many Ameri
can-owned businesses do not employ
American citizens? I’m not referring
to foreign immigrants who have the
proper paperwork and have endured
the red-tape process required to be
come a citizen of this country. Anyone
who would endure such a long,
drawn-out process deserves to be
here. I am referring to those employ
ees who do not belong in this country.
Illegal aliens. Many American-owned

The Forsyth AARP Chapter will be holding their
first regular meeting on Friday, Jan. 24 at Western
Steer Restaurant The business meeting will be at
11 a m. and a Lunch’n’leam will be from 12 noon to
1 p.m.
Dr. Angeline E. Benham, Ph.D. will be the key
note speaker and the topic will be "The Psychology
of Successful Aging.”
Dr. Benham is a Psychology Professor at Georgia
Institute of Technology. She is a licensed Psycholo
gist specializing in clinical psychology. She is also a
consultant to: Gerontology Center, Ga. State Uni
versity, Ga. Department of Human Resources, and
Mental Health Centers.
Dr. Benham is the first of special keynote speak
ers sponsored by AARP Lunch’n'Leam.
A special serving process will allow AARP atten
dants to arrive at the restaurant at 12 noon, be
served quickly and be able to leave before 1 p.m.
businesses employ illegal aliens be
cause they work for next to nothing.
After all, if they give the company any
grief, it only takes a phone call to INS
to get them back in line. Therefore,
these people are going to work and
never complain.
And, no, I haven’t delved into any
statistics to find out how many illegal
aliens are employed in this country. I
don’t have to. All I have to do is take a
look around where I live and work.
Maybe those labels that read “Made
in America” should also include a la
bel stating, “Made by American Citi
zens.” After all, if you want to make it
truly American-made, it should be
made by Americans. Right?
Am I asking too much? I don’t think
so. This corporate business world has
gotten way out of hand. And more than
a little out of line. I felt guilty for a
time when I would see those “buy
American” commercials on tv. But
when I really sat down and thought
about it, the American public are not
the people who determine where
products are made. It is the corporate
business world. We can “buy Ameri
can” all we want, but businesses still
will have products shipped, snipped
and clipped in Taiwan, Korea, Japan,
etc.
And I don’t know about anyone else,
but I’m getting a little tired of feeling
guilty over the entire matter.
After all, who was it that decided to
bring the imports in in the first place?
Not the American public, I can assure
you.
Well, I do have a toilet bowl brush
that was Made in America.
’Nuff said.

DEAR ABBY: My husband and I
hosted a large wedding for our daugh
ter recently.
A week later, “Melanie,” an old
friend of mine who is divorced, called
to ask for the telephone number of the
groom’s mother, who is also divorced.
(I’ll call her Katie.) Melanie had met
Katie at the wedding, found they had
a lot in common, and decided to get
together for lunch. She said Katie had
given her her telephone number, but
she had misplaced it
I gave Melanie Katie’s number -
then I told her I was hurt to think that
she would make a date to see Katie
without including me, whereupon she
said I was "welcome” to join them for
lunch.
I was so hurt and angry, I did not
accept Abby, was it proper for Me
lanie to make a date with Katie with
out including me? - EXCLUDED
DEAR EXCLUDED: I see nothing
wrong with Melanie and Katie decid

including you. But I do see something
wrong with your telling Melanie that
you were “hurt,” thus embarrassing
