Sawnee Community Center membership meeting
The Sawnee Community Center an
nual membership meeting will be
Tuesday, Jan. 28. 7:30 p.m. at Magno

Erika Bird, Certified Herbalist, teaches
health and nutrition classes. The next class
will be on Monday, Jan. 27 from 7:30 - 9:30

Girl Scout Cookies to go on sale
The Northeast Georgia Girl Scout Council
will launch the order taking phase of its an
nual Girl Scout Cookie sale on Jan. 15. Pre
orders will be taken until Jan. 26. Delivery
will begin after Feb. 15.

A garden seminar will be held Saturday.

College in Dahlonega. Featured speakers

Quilt-In-A-Day Workshop
A Quilt-In-A-Day workshop will be held

Manners and Modeling
The Cumming Recreation and Parks De
partment offers etiquette and modeling
classes. Instructor Diane Dorris teacher her
altogether lovely course at the park on Pil
grim Mill Road. The course meets each Mon
day 5-6 p.m. Cost is $35 per month. The alto
gether lovely course is a three month course
for girls ages 10-16 years of age
Classes will begin on Feb. 3,1992. to regis
ter come by the park Monday-Friday 9-5 p. m.
Diane Dorris has taught her personal im
provement course for 17 years. She is an ex
perienced model and modeling instructor.
Mrs. Dorris is a former Director of a Model
ing School. She has judged beauty contests
throughout Georgia and has experience in
pagaent training. She has most recently held
a position of assistant to the first lady ofGeor
gia and is qualified in social graces
This class will include the following:
Make-up, the Model Walk, etiquette, social
poise, tea time, fashion coordination, pos
ture, goal setting, manners, the social graces,
exercise, skin care, hair styles, positive self
esteem. photographic modeling, the models

Guilds
The Cumming Sunset Quilters meets on
the second Thursday of each month. 2nd
floor of the County Courthouse at 7 p.m. For

The Piecemakers Quilt Guild meets on the
first Tuesday of each month, at Bethelview
United Methodist Church at 9:30 a.m. The

Valentine’s Party at Midway Park
The annual Valentine's Party/Convention
Luncheon will be Monday. Feb. 3, 10 a.m., at
Midway Park.
Mrs. Linda Adams and Connie Underwood

the group that will enhance the Valentine
atmosphere.

For The Love of Family
For The Love of Family is sponsored by the
Sawnee Elementary School each Tuesday
morning in February from 8:30 to 9:30. There
are many requests for additional suggestions
in the problem area of living in a family and
many questions about parenting guides for
leading a family in a healthy direction. The
following program is being offered to ad
dress these needs.
•Feb. 4: Did You Say What I Thought You
Said will address developing communica
tion and listening skills within the family and
will be led by Esther Armour, Sawnee Ele
mentary School Counselor.
•Feb. 11: Dr. Jeb Stuart ofCharter Peachford
Hospital will discuss Sibling Rivalry. He will
give suggestions on how a parent can handle
problems between brothers and sisters.
•Feb. 18: Family Sculpting deals with what
roles you play in your family. Debbie Ron
dem, Forsjth County Drug Free Coordinator,
and Melanie Dallas. Mental Health Associa
tion Case Worker, will help you examine the
power of family dynamics, they will give sug
gestions on how to change your role within
the family.
•Feb. 25: Yours, Mine, and Ours-The Blend
ed Family is presented by Kay Aronson. For
syth County School Social Worker, who will
address step-parenting issues which arise
when two families merge. You will find out
how to have a smooth beginning or how to
untangle the web of problems which may al
ready be present in home.
Sawnee PTO will provide baby sitting.
Free coffee and fellowship will make this
experience informative and enjoyable.

ings set

Parks and Recreation Board Meetings All
meetings will take place on a Wednesday at
7:30 p.m. in the Forsyth County Courthouse,
2nd floor, off of Courtroom number 2: Febru

Quilted Jacket Class
Forsyth County Parks and Recreation De
partment is sponsoring a Quilted Jacket
Class. The claf; will begin Thursday, Feb. 6,
9:30-11:30 a m. At the Midway Park Commu
nity Building
The class will cover the construction of the
"Europa-Jackef ’ with either the log cabin or

Seniors helping seniors program
Laura Patterson, a long time Forsyth Coun
ty resident will be teaching a Tatting Class at
Midway Park on Monday. Feb. 10 and 24,10-
noon.
Tatting is the Art of Lacemaking and is
considered a dying art form. Participants
need to bring a tatting shuttle and a ball of no.
20 and no. 30 cotton yam.

Forsyth Library sets 1992
meetings
The Forsyth County Library Board of
Trustees has approved a meeting schedule
for Fiscal Year 1992. Meetings will be held in
the Forsyth County Government Building un
til the March meeting, at which time further
meetings will be conducted in the new For
syth County Public Library' now under con
struction at the corner of Highway 9 and
Charles Place, is ready for occupancy, cur
rently scheduled for April 1992 All meetings
will be held at 5 p.m.; this is a change of time
from previous meetings, which were held at
5:30 p.m.
Meetings will be held on the following
Mondays: Feb. 17. March 16. April 20. May 18.
and June 15.
Midway has ‘Focus on the Family’
event
Midway Elementary PTA is sponsoring
their second annual "Focus On The Family"
event on Tuesday. Feb. 4. from 7-8:30 p.m
This special program is designed to give par
ents valuable information on a variety oftop
ics to boost their parenting skills. This highly
informative evening was a great success last
year and is being offered again by popular
demand.
The program will begin in the school
lunchroom at 7 p.m. with a keynote address
by Ms. Beverly Carter, sixth-grade co-ordina
tor of South Forsyth Middle School, discuss
ing what parents can do to best prepare their
elementary child for the transition to middle
school.
Immediately following at both 7:30 and 8
p.m. will be a variety of mini-sessions in des
ignated classrooms. Parents may choose to
attend any two of the following programs:
1) “Disciplining Your Children Without
Beating Them," by Linda Whittle. Preschool
Facilitator.
2) “How to Deal With Sex Questions Honest
ly,” by Lisa Taylor, Counselor. District
Health Office in Gainesville.
3) “Motivating Your Child: Increasing Self-
Esteem.” by Sandra Zelley, Clinical Social
Worker. Northside Outpatient Mental
Health.
4) "Food Allergies and It’s Effect on Behav
ior", by Young S. Shin, M.D. Atlanta Allergy-
Nutritional Medicine.
5) “Normal Adolescence to Teenage Tur
moil,” by Charles Stewart.
6) "Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and Hy
peractivity,” by Rosalynn Smith of Charter
Peachford Hospital.
This special program is free and open to
the public. Free child care with organized
play groups will be provided in the school
gym by Junior Girl Scout Troop 411 and adult
supervisors.

Rock-A-Thon
The South Forsyth High and Middle
School Band will be conducting their second
annual Rock-A-Thon at the school on Friday.
Feb. 21 through Saturday, Feb. 22. This is a
major fundraiser and provides money for
band expenses and improvements as well as
a full night of fun and recreation for students
and parents. In preparation for this event the
students will be seeking pledges to rock (in a
rocking chair) for a fixed amount of money
per hour. Your support will keep South For
syth Band rockin’!

News for Working Senior Citizens
Workers who will be age 65 in 1992 will
earn less than $30,000.00 in 1992 should con
tact Social Security in January of this year to
get an estimate of their retirement benefits.
Over the years benefit amounts have gone up
and the amount you can earn has been liber
alized to the point that often benefits are
payable even though an individual may have
substantial earnings. The important thing to
do is call 1-800-772-1213 to get a benefit esti
mate to see if you can qualify for any Social
Security benefits in 1992.
