Midway and Sawnee schools
put the focus on parenting

Two local elementary schools are
sponsoring free programs in Febru
ary which focus on parenting skills
and family life.
Both programs are open to the com
munity and are free of charge.
First, Sawnee Elementary School is
sponsoring its “For the Love of the
Family” each Tuesday morning in
February, 8:30 to 9:30.
The Feb. 4 program, “Did You Say
What I Thought You Said” will ad
dress developing communication and
listening skills within the family and
will be led by Esther Armour, Sawnee
Elementary School Counselor.
Future programs include: Feb. 11 -
Dr. Jeb Stuart of Charter Peachford
Hospital will discuss Sibling Rivalry.
Feb. 18 - Family Sculpting deals with
what roles you play in your family.
Debbie Rondem, Forsyth County
Drug Free Coordinator, and Melanie
Dallas, Mental Health Association
Case Worker, will help parents exam
ine the power of family dynamics.
Feb. 25 - Yours, Mine, and Ours-The
Blended Family is presented by Kay
Aronson, Forsyth County School So
cial Worker.
Organized by Esther Armour and
Kay Aronson, the programs will deal
with many areas parents have shown
an interest in.
Sawnee requires no registration
and free child care is available.
Second, the Midway Elementary
PTA is sponsoring their second annu
al “Focus On The Family” event on
Tuesday, Feb. 4, from 7-8:30 p.m.

Cherokee Open Juried Competition is
Wednesday,Jan. 29 from7:3o-9p.m. in
the lower lobby of the hill-Freeman
Library, Reinhardt College, Waleska,
Ga. During the reception, refresh
ments will be served and awards will
be announced.

sor and co-chairman of the Cherokee
County Arts Council, said he was very
pleased with the artists’ response to
the show.

a variety of topics to boost their par
enting skills.
This highly informative evening
was a great success last year, drawing
more than 200 parents, and is being
offered again by popular demand,
said Judy Alston of the Midway PTA.
The program will begin in the
school lunchroom at 7 p.m. with a key
note address by Ms. Beverly Carter,
sixth-grade co-ordinator of South
Forsyth Middle School, discussing
what parents can do to best prepare
their elementary child for the transi
tion to middle school.
Immediately following at both 7:30
and 8 p.m. will be a variety of mini
sessions in designated classrooms.
Parents may choose to attend any two
ofthe following programs: “Disciplin
ing Your Children Without Beating
Them,” by Linda Whittle, Preschool
Facilitator. “How to Deal With Sex
Questions Honestly,” by Lisa Taylor,
Counselor, District Health Office in
Gainesville. “Motivating Your Child:
Increasing Self-Esteem,” by Sandra
Zelley, Clinical Social Worker, North
side Outpatient Mental Health. “Food

curated a state-wide exhibition of folk
art which hung in the Georgia Gover
nor’s office in the summer of 1991. It
was named “Best Visual Art Exhibit
in Atlanta” in Creative Loafing.
Ninety-three works are in the show
including paintings, graphics, sculp
tures, mixed media, photography, fi
ber, glass, clay and wood. The exhibit
will be on display from Jan. 29-Feb.

Learning Resources System at Pioneer R.E.S.A., who came to Chestatee last week to give a seminar
to teachers in the community on Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. He discussed the character
istics of ADHD with the teachers and gave them resources and suggestions about how to deal with the
disorder in the classroom and help students get the most out of their learning experience.
At the reception, first, second, and
third place prizes will be awarded as

Quilted Jacket Class
Forsyth County Parks and Recreation De
partment is sponsoring a Quilted Jacket
Class. The class will begin Thursday. Feb. 6.
9:30-11:30 a m. At the Midway Park Commu
nity Building.
The class will cover the construction of the
“Europa-Jacket" with either the log cabin or
dresden plate front. Basic sewing machine
experience is necessary.
The instructor is Jill Schneider and the fee
for the four week class is $45. pattern

Seniors helping seniors program
Laura Patterson, a longtime Forsyth Coun
ty resident, will be teaching a Tatting Class at
Midway Park on Monday, Feb. 10 and 24,10-
noon.
Tatting is the Art of Laeemaking and is
considered a dying art form. Participants
need to bring a tatting shuttle and a ball of no.
20 and no. 30 cotton yam.
