tinued to work at the plant
“I was so sorry when I heard about
it I went by yesterday and it just
looked awful,” she said. Echols began
work as one of the eight original
employees.
Everyone at the plant knew every
one else and had annual dinners at
Christmas, Thanksgiving and the 4th
of July as well as the boss’ birthdays.
“We had a lot of good times there
and a lot of hard work, too,” said Mrs.
Echols.
Pauline Pirkle was one of the
plant’s original supervisors. She re
tired in 1990 after 30 years there.
She still dropped in to visit her
frineds there every month or two. Her
last visit to the old building was
Thursday before it burned.
The people were like family to her,
she said.
“James didn’t seem like a boss, he
was more like a brother. We were all
like brothers and sisters,” she said.
“It seemed like home. It shocked
me to death to hear it burned. It was
just like a death in the family,” Mrs.
Pirkle said.
“I went back down there again to
day. I want to know what happened,”
she said.
