Field trips available at Dawson Forest
They’re dirty but they are smil
ing. They have just completed an
experiment to find the different
particles in various soil samples.
Earlier in the day, they learned
about natural succession and
hiked a shady trail, pushing but
tons and listening to informative
talks about local tree species.
They will also observe fire safety
procedures, become familiar with
fire fighting equipment and watch
it being used. Some are new to the
woods and have never experi
enced the forest. Others have
families with acreage in trees and
know more about management of
the forest. Whatever the level or
age of student, those that visit take
home some new knowledge about
the environment and how forests
belong and play a part in nature.
Dedicated in December of 1994,
the Hightower Education Forest in
Dawson County provides a unique
opportunity for the education of
students on forests and forest
management. This 142-acre facili
ty offers hands-on learning experi
ences for nearby school children.
Owned and operated by the
Georgia Forestry Commission, the
Forest is bordered by the Etowah
River and includes woods, fields,
ponds and streams. Originally a
nursery for pine seedlings, the
property has contributed to
forestry in Georgia since 1953. In
the 19705, the buildings located
on the site were used as metal fab
rication shops to construct “fire
knockers”, or small fire trucks
used to control wildfires in coun
ties around the state. The
University of Georgia and the
U.S. Forest Service began
research projects on the property
in the 1980 s which continue today
to provide long term data on prob
lems such as air pollution effects

FORSYTH COUNTY NEWS Sunday, Saptambar 24, IM9
on forest health, tree diseases, and
reforestation methods. In the mid
1980 s, an acid rain monitor was
installed as part of a national net
work to track pH levels of local
rainfall. The Environmental
Protection Division of the
Department of Natural Resources
began an ozone monitoring station
that same year and the Georgia
Forestry Commission added a
remote weather station accessible
by computer anywhere in the
state. Local school teachers
learned of the facility and began
requesting field trips. The U.S.
Forest Service provided a grant in
1993 and with matching funds
from the Forestry Commission,
the Hightower Education Forest
was created.
The Forest now has several new
additions to add to its resources. A
“talking tree trail” features infor
mative electronic exhibits, an out
door amphitheater provides a
space for learning lessons, an
indoor classroom facility featuring
a large screen TV and VCR in
case of inclement weather pro
vides another place for program
instruction, and upland and low
land soil profile sites demonstrate
soil layers and the history of soil
development.
Programs offered at the
Hightower Education Forest are
diverse and cover many different
topics. A decomposition program
gives students a chance to explore
a rotting log; a soil program lets
them explore properties of soil
and discover soil’s importance; a
program on tree measurement
allows them to determine the
amount of lumber in a single tree;
pollutions affecting forest growth
are studied in another lesson. In
addition, there are wildlife stud
ies, water studies, programs on
the economics of forestry, paper
making, composting, and many
more. The main theme being the
importance of forests, and
agement of those forests to pro
duce products, maximize growth
and maintain health, provide
habitats for animals and plants, ‘
and preserve the beauty of the
outdoors.
Field trips to the Forest are not
considered a free day. State cur
riculum specialists were consult- 1
ed to determine guideline
ments and lesson plans werd*
developed to introduce and
achieve these basic core concepts
outlined in the QCC document, br
Quality Core Curriculum docu-'
ment. Teachers wishing to visit,
call to verify a date. The topics'
they wish to study are determined
and an itinerary is drawn up for'
their trip. Upon arrival, schools
are broken down into groups of
25 or less and programs begin. A
shaded picnic area is available fOf
lunch as well as a coke machine
for drinks. Before teachers
depart,they are provided with
copies of the lesson outlines
which include information about
curriculum requirements that
have been satisfied, evaluation
techniques, ideas for follow-up
activities, and a list of references
for further study.
Future developments are antici
pated. A wildfood food plot has
been planted and programs
addressing wildlife management
are being created. The 10,000
acre Dawson Forest, owned by
the city of Atlanta, offers exam
ples of forestry management prac
tices and programs are being con
sidered with that property in
mind. Teacher workshops have
been conducted and will continue
to be provided at the Forest.
