Volunteers for the
Daw vm/Forsyth chapter for Safe
Kids of Georgia spent three early
mornings last week and this week
:n local high school parking lots
counting students wearing their
seat belts and handing out infor
mation The seat belt survey is
part of the National Safety Belt
Honor Roll, a national safety pro
ject from the U.S Department of
Transportation’s National
Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA).
After 100 cars at each of the
three county high schools were
checked, North Forsyth High
School came out on top with 66
percent of the students surveyed
wearing seat belts. In a close sec
ond, Central High had a 62 per
cent compliance. Trailing both
schools, South Forsyth needs the
most improvement with only 56
percent of students wearing their
seat belts
Sgt. David Frix, coalition leader
for Safe Kids, said those in the

Sadly drinking and driving is an
unfortunate side effect to holiday
festivities. Padgett, Jones and
Singletary ail emphasized the fact
that the city and county are strict
ly enforcing all traffic laws this
holiday season. “We will be
doing road checks throughout the
holidays to try and curb thieves
and drunk drivers,” Padgett said
Jones said that if someone wants
to drink they should use a desig
nated driver. “There is a taxi ser
Lifesavers, those who were not
received a sticker that said
“ Buckle-up or splat.”
Although organizers were proud
of the numbers of students who
did wear their seat belts, Frix said
improvement is necessary.
“There are so many more out
there that need to wear theirs,” he
said.
Rachel Crawshaw, regional
coordinator for the University of
Georgia s Occupant Safety
Program and a Safe Kids organiz
er, said the results came out better
than she expected.
Two years ago Crawshaw per
formed an informal study of seal
belt users at high schools. Only
49 percent of Central High School
students wore their seat belts. At
South Forsyth 51 percent of stu
dents surveyed wore theirs. North
was not yet open at that time.
“Kids as a whole are a little
more informed,” she said.
Over the next 30 days, posters
will be put up and announcements
will be made in schools to let stu
dents know about the national seat
belt program. Public service
announcements will also be
broadcast on the radio.
Crawshaw said she hopes to get
the students excited about the pro
gram due to the national recogni
tion and the inter-school rivalry
between the high schools.
“It will be interesting to see if it
makes any impact at all,” she
said.

According to the Safety Belt
Honor Roll rules, after the initial
survey, those being tested must
bring their levels of seat belt com
pliance ?o at least 70 percent in 30
days to be eligible for national
aw irdy National awards come in
three levels: bronze for organiza
tions with 70 percent of those sur
veyed wearing seat belts, silver
for organizations with 80 percent
compliance and gold for those
with 90 percent compliance.
All award winners are docu
mented at the NHTSA in
Washington, D C. and are men
tioned in the promotional materi
als and documents published by
the NHTSA.
According to information dis
tributed by the U.S. Department
of Transportation, traffic crashes
are the leading cause of death for
youth and young adults. One-third
of all deaths for people between
15-24 years of age are caused in
traffic accidents.
In 1993 over 5,000 youths 16-20
years old were killed in traffic
related accidents. Three-quarters
of those who died were not wear
ing safety belts. If they had been
wearing safety belts, 1,350 would
have survived.
Crawshaw said on average 5,500
teenagers every year die in traffic
accidents enough to kill-off an
entire senior class every three
weeks.
