She bought a book about volun teer opportunities abroad and found Simon Community, which was founded in 1963. Although she admits working in a foreign country has lost some of Its .novelty after being there some time, Cartwright is anxious to return this week. She has been at home with her parents, Earl and Patricia Gignilliat, working two jobs to earn enough money to go back. The video dramatized the conse quences of drug possession, and featured “Kai”, a Malnois drug dog from the Netherlands. “This dog has paid for himself many times over through drug seizures,” Padgett said. Sheriff Padgett thanked Forsyth In the heart of London, she has set up a sidewalk cafe for the homeless, which was beginning to receive media attention by the time she left to come home. The cafe’s tables and chairs offer the home less a gathering spot “free from the fear of being told they must move on,” Cartwright said. Free hot tea and coffee are served. “They read the paper, swap books and have chats,” Cartwright said. “It’s a spot without planned activities, so they aren’t told to do crafts or something. They can just relax.” About 20 individuals visit the outdoor cafe at once, unless it’s raining, Cartwright said. In addition to the shelters and the cafe, the Simon Community vol- Central for their help with the video and Paul Spencer (one of the actors that participated in the video) for his help, he said. Deputy Sheriff Diane Baggett is the D.A.R.E. officer who teaches drug education in Forsyth County Elementary Schools year-round. The program is a 17-week course where Baggett spends one day in each school per week. The D.A.R.E. program began in 1984 in the Los Angeles School District as a joint operation unteers also go on soup runs and tea runs, taking a truckful of treats to the homeless throughout the day and night. They also talk with homeless people in the streets, offering them a chance to unload their troubles. “I’d say we come in contact with 150 homeless people each day,” Cartwright said. That’s not always easy. “It’s hard. There are so many people telling you so much pain,” Cartwright said. “It’s stressful and demanding.” Cartwright will help out at the Simon Community for a bit longer, but next year she hopes to study philosophy at the University of London. for the Holidays! Lessons with model air planes mimic lessons in life, he said. “If you can come out of situa tions like that with your head up and continue the sport, that says a lot about you,” Utsman said. The Chattahoochee Riverside Flyers airfield was opened two years ago in December. Don Urch worked with Hy Haggett, the man ager of the park, to develop the area. An existing runway was reconditioned, six to eight feet of growth was removed, land was leveled, trees were cut down and a drainage system was installed to create the park, Urch said. An entire family, regardless of their flying abilities, can enjoy the park. Behind the green airfield are picnic tables, a children’s play area, a horseshoe pit and basket ball courts. 100% Complete Home Built on Your Land "Monthly payment based on 8% APR fin. 30 years on your improved land, plus taxes and insurance. The AMA provides a list of safety regulations and insurance for model airplane fliers. “It’s a big mistake to think those motors are a toy,” Haggett said.
