Forsyth County’s youth softball
program continues to shine, as the
14-Under All-Stars won the
GRPA District 7 tournament.
Saturday’s 7-3 victory over the
Jackson County All-Stars capped
a perfect 5-0 record throughout
the event.
Head Coach Heath “Wifi” Shaw
said, “The pressure was on. We
needed to come out and win.”
Trailing 3-2 in the fifth inning,
Forsyth mounted its first real
threat and they capitalized—pro
ducing five runs to capture the
lead. Heather Upchurch started
with a single followed by Sarah
Wedlake, who reached on an
error. Suzanne Daniell then tied
the game with a base hit.
A double from Emily Pritchett
plated another run. Dedra
Groover then hit a hard ground
ball that handcuffed the right cen
terfielder, scoring three runs.
Groover went all the way around
and scored on the error.
“Groover’s shot turned the game
and picked us up. (In the fifth) we
came in and it was like somebody
turned on the switch. Everybody
did what they were supposed to,”
Shaw said.
In the sixth Jackson tried to
make a comeback, but Forsyth’s
defense held steady. Jackson
began the inning hitting the ball
sharply. Stephanie Pass snared a
line drive, but the next batter
drove a shot into the outfield. A
walk and a single then loaded the
bases.
The pitcher, Kristen Damron,
then caught a screamer that was
drilled back at her. With two out
Jackson County hit another rope;
this time third baseman Jessica
Watters caught it to end the
threat.
In the first inning, Forsyth
jumped on the scoreboard scoring
two runs. Watter hit a single and
was followed by Pass, who hit a
shot into the gap for a home run.
Forsyth and Jackson had played
earlier in the day Saturday. In the
early game Forsyth pounded out
12 runs and shut Jackson out for
five innings.
Shaw said, “Liz Pirkle, Heather
Upchurch, and Watters all had
excellent defensive games. We
just came out hitting.”
In the third inning Forsyth set
the tone as they scored nine runs.
Six singles turned into six runs
and Watters hit the big blow, a
double that plated two runs. In
the fifth, Pritchett hit a triple that
scored a run and ended the game
with the mercy rule.

16-and-Unders break
through to dominate

With a gritty determination
underlying their overwhelming
dominance, the Forsyth 16-and-
Under All-Star Team One was
the class of its field in
Danielsville Saturday.
They easily captured their
GRPA District 7 Softball
Tourney, beating host Madison
County in the finale, 13-1.
Some of their counterparts in
the other two District 7 tourneys
at the complex weren’t so fortu
nate. The 16-and-Under Team
Two was eliminated with two
losses.
Madison also hosted the 18-
and-Under event, which saw
Forsyth’s entry win its first
game, but then drop its next
two —all close decisions.
Finally, both 12-and-Under
Forsyth All-Star teams won
openers in a tourney that will
continue until Thursday.

It may have looked easy for
the Team One All-Stars, but a
look at shortstop Beth Lively
revealed that the price for excel

Playing most of the champi

banged out three hits, but some

the two runs that ended the rout
via the 12-run rule in the sixth
inning.
Meanwhile, Lori Gravitt
clubbed a three-run triple that
gave Forsyth a 5-1 lead in the
third, part of a seven-run inning
that all but put the game away.
“This is as good as it gets right
here,” Coach Rex Carlyle said,

time dodging summer storms
Saturday as they did competing,'

end.
The end result was some excel

Gainesville.
Led by champion Erik Halthen
and his speedy brother and sister,
the Waves had 15 top-eight finish

Pentathlon scoring was done by
adding the swimmers’ individual

stroke, backstroke, butterfly (25
yards for 10-and-Unders, 50 yards
for 11-and-Up) and 100-yard indi
