LAKE LANIER FISHING
REPORT FOR JULY 17,1996
Lake Sidney Lanier is full, and
the water temperature is 86
degrees. The main lake is clear
and the creeks and up river areas
are slightly stained.
The best day for fishing will be
Saturday, July 20, 1996, 2 p.m.
until 4:30 p.m. All week the
Data Sport fishing times are best
mid day all week.
Black bass fishing is barely fair
and the fish are shallow on the
banks early and late each day.
Spinner bails, worms and Culprit
lizards are catching some of these
fish around docks and blow
downs.
Also look on points in the creeks
and the docks that are close to
deep water as they are holding
summer pattern bass. Flipping
worms or spinner baits around
and in heavy brush can draw a
strike early and late.
Cast the gourd green lizard by
Zoom on a Texas rig and work
these baits slowly in the heavy
brush with a light weight. Add
some extra scent using Jack’s
Juice and work the lures in the
same locations several times.
Crank bails are fair in the river
and use small #5 Shad Raps in the
shad and baby bass colors on light
6-pound test Easy Cast line. Cast
to the wood and cuts in the
creeks.
Also use the 3/8 ounce
Hildebrandt spinner bait with
smaller silver willow leaf blades.
Slick with the wood pattern and
also use the Smoky Joe finesse

12U games
Forsyth County team 1 lost two
one-run games on Saturday to
Jackson and Habersham County,
4-3 and 13-14.
“It’s a real heartbreaker,” said
Head Coach David Sexton.
Forsyth was up 3-2 over Jackson
in the sixth inning, when a 2-
R. 8.1. ground-rule double ended
the game in Jackson’s favor and
forced Forsyth into the loser’s
bracket.
Later that afternoon, they faced
Habersham in a run-fest. “We
played well, but just came up
short,” Sexton said.
He was particuarly proud of
Zachary Boling (who is only 10
years old), who had a 3-run
homer, and Justin Rickett who
had a 2-run homer.

12-Under Team One
Thursday Team One won a 1-0
pitcher’s duel against Habersham.
Carl Meadows started on the
mound, and Dusty Benefield fin
ished, recording seven Ks in the
last three innings. Forsyth pitch
ing gave up only two hits the
worms on the points on the Texas
rig. Cast right on the banks heavy
cover early and late each day.
Keep moving and have a small
tiny Torpedo ready for schooling
during the day.
Spotted bass are fair and there
are lots of fish on points and
around all the lake’s docks.
These fish are deep in the man
made and the natural cover during
the day and they will bite live or
artificial lures —but presentations
need to be slow and deep. Also
work small worms on any of the
main lake rocky points on a light
Texas rig.
Spots are on the summer pattern
all over the lake, meaning slow
and deep during the day. Use the
finesse style green or icicle
worms on a Texas rig. Some loca
tions to work on early and late
each day will be the Ordain lake
reef markers.
Small to medium chrome and
blue top water lures can draw the
spots, but the key is to move
around and make only a few casts
to each location. Use the small
Johnny Rattlers or all white
Rooster tails and make long casts
with light 10 pound test. If the
fish don’t cooperate, keep mov
ing.
Night fishing is fair on a small
dark finesse worm on a Texas rig.
Stick to points and lighted docks
all night.
Stripers are in the deep standing
timber and on main lake river
channels. Main lake humps and
ridges that taper into the river will
be the best locations for these
entire game.
Ryan McClure stood out offen
sively, hitting three-for-three.
12-Under Team Two
Team Two won 5-0 against
Commerce Thursday night,
thanks to Jeremy Compton’s no
hitter. However, they did not fare
as well in Friday’s game against
Jackson County, losing 9-4.
Compton went the distance for
his gen with 11 Ks. He was also
an integral part of the offense, hit
ting a solo homer in the fifth
inning.
10-Under Team One
Thursday Team One won 13-4
against Habersham.
“Everybody on the team got at
least one hit,” said Head Coach
David Light. “All of the players
contributed offensively.”
The scoring blitz began in the
fifth inning, when Forsyth began a
two-out eight-run frenzy.
Os defensive note was Judd
Gravitt’s performance on the
mound. He pitched four innings

summer fish.
Depths are 25 to 40 feet, and
after mid morning look for these
fish to move off into the main lake
standing timber. Use a long leader
and a medium Kahle hook, and
place the medium shiners or carp
straight down on the main lake
humps and close to the points.
Use the 12 pound test Stren Easy
Cast line for these stripers. Keep a
Zara Spook ready in chrome for
any surface activity as any time.
Look for any bait fish already in
the area in the mouths of the
creeks all over the lake. Also try a
winter tactic: cut bait at night on
points.
Crappie are biting best at night
and live minnows are the best
baits. The bridges up and down
lake will be the best areas all
week and spend the night with
lots of light over the water.
The lights will bring in lots of
newly hatched tiny shad all night
from the rocks around the bridges.

Luck with your fishing.

admiring his roster of stars from
the three Forsyth high schools. “I
hope we can do better in the states
this time.”
Cassi Bennett also drove in two
runs in that third inning with a
single.
For the game, Erin Shultz had
three hits, including a double, and
plated two. Lauren Gaines, Emily
Rice and Nicole Cobb each had
two more hits for Forsyth.
The Stars looked a little sleepy
in their opener, just nosing out
Winder-Barrow. Rallying from a
3- deficit, they finally prevailed,
4- “The first game we were kind
of dead,” said Carlyle.
A Lively triple and Gravitt sac
fly narrowed the gap, then Gaines
tied the game in the fifth with a
double. Crystal Carlyle’s sac fly
finally knocked in Beth Welch
with the winner in the sixth.

Fully awake, Forsyth hammered
Madison, 18-4, to reach the final.
A 9-run sixth put it on ice for the
winners.
Cobb had two triples and two
singles and drove in four. Shultz
added two hits, including another
triple, and plated four more.
Lively had three hits and scored
three, Rice scored three and
Carlyle drove in two.
Madison won in the loser’s
bracket to get another shot at
Forsyth, but were barely closer.
16-and-Under Team Two
Though several athletes played
well, ultimately a lack of depth
hurt Team Two.
Coach Doug Geisler’s team was
missing a significant handful of
players, including most of its out
fielders. “It was disappointing that
Willis had a 2nd and two 3rds
and Horton had a 4th and two sths
to highlight their efforts. Wasson
had a 3rd and two sths (but also a
9th) and Stieglitz’s best was two
6ths. Others: 23. Michelle
Lipscomb, 25. Brittney Wilson.
14-and-Unders:
Halthen’s best was a 6th. Others:
20. Tamara Morris.
18-and-Unders:
Others: 15. Becky Harrington.
Boys
8-and-Unders:
Halthen had three thirds in his
effort. Others: 11. Colin Stieglitz,
12. Dallas Crum.
10-and-Unders:
Brandon Wilson was 2nd in the
back and 3rd in the medley.
we couldn’t get everyone there,”
he said.
The Stars lost to Madison, 14-7,
then to Winder in the loser’s
bracket, 14-5. Forsyth led the sec
ond game, 5-2, before a grand
slam and a nine-run inning did
them in.
Lindsay Freeman had three hits
to lead in game twb. “Lindsey
pitched very well in both games,”
Geisler added.
He also praised the defensive
efforts of Sarah Dotson and
Lindsey Sprinkle, who had to play
out of position.
Katie Shoemake and Kristy
Geisler each had two hits, includ
ing a solo homer for Shoemake.
More on the 18-and-Under and
12-and-Under teams in upcoming
issues of the Forsyth County
News.
Others: 9. Adam Baldwin, 14.
Shane Rollman, 16. Daniel
Butman.
12-and-Unders:
Price’s best was a fourth in the
breaststroke. Others: 9. Chris
Jesberger, 10. Nick York.
14-and-Unders:
Wilson had three seconds to
highlight his effort. Kelley’s best
was a 6th, but was consistent.
Lamb’s was a fifth. Others: 10.
Mike McCrory, 12. Adam
Butman.
Also: There were a few events
held for 6-and-Under swimmers.
In the 25-yard back, Bridgette
Dunshire was second. She was
also fourth in the 25 free.
Moriah Spicer, Lindsey Miller,
Heidi Smith and Felicia Adams
were other placers.
