JILL JACKSON’S HOLLYWOOD
HOLLYWOOD ... Candy
Bergen was never the hit on the big
screen that she is in “Murphy
Brown” on the little one. Now, I see
where she and Bette Midler are
talking a new version of “The
Fortune Cookie,” the classic Billy
Wilder film starring Jack Lemmon
and Walter Matthau. If it does
come to fruition, ‘twill be interest
ing to see if Candy’s career takes
off as a movie star. Meanwhile, she
and Chloe are settling into their
new Beverly Hills digs and life
without Louie Malle.
Friends and relations still telling
me about the night Disney took
over The Big Easy with 65,000 in
the Superdome and a super parade
on the streets. The publicity is pay
ing off. Parents and kiddiebumps
throughout the U.S. of A. are flock
ing to see “The Hunchback of
Notre Dame.” And well they
should. This animated musical ver
sion is a wonder of color, action,
music and a plot with a message.
Remembering the Charles
Laughton and Lon Chaney versions
I wondered, why the Hunchback as
a Disney cartoon? Now I know. It’s
what entertainment is all about.
It was quite a week for nostalgia
when at a Charles Pollock party,
Nacio Herb Brown Jr. took to the
piano playing many of his father’s
wondrous tunes “You Are My
Lucky Star,” “Doll Dance,”
“Singin’ In the Rain,” “All I do,”
“Wedding of the Painted Doll” and
on and on. He and his wife,

THE CABLE GUY *
I remember watching an inter
view with Robin Williams some
years back in which he was pok
ing fun at a some reviews he’d
received. He said he was amused
when the reviewers called his
dramatic performances in such
films as “Good Morning
Vietnam,” “Awakenings,” “Dead
Poets Society,” as “restrained,”
“disciplined,” etc., etc. He
claimed that the next time he
took a dramatic role, they’d
probably say he was in a coma!
This all came to mind as I
watched this latest Jim Carrey
offering in which Carrey takes
on a different, more challenging
role than those he’d previously
successfully accomplished.
Carrey portrays a cable installer
by the name of Chip. Apparently,
the field is a natural for him
since his entire life and persona
have been shaped by his televi
sion viewing habits. Chip is a
cross between a slapstick Three-
Stooges type of guy and “Fatal

sinister at the same time.
Called to install cable TV for
Steven Kovacs (Matthew
Broderick), he latches onto the
poor guy like a leech, forging a
rather questionable friendship.
Kovacs has just been dumped by
his girlfriend, so Chip comes up
with a scheme to get her back.
He also ingratiates himself in
several other ways just to be near
Steven.
What’s brilliant about Caney’s
performance are the mood
swings which he exhibits so
well. You don’t know if he’s
going to roar with laughter or get
out a cleaver and start chasing
Kovacs. It’s really wonderful.
Broderick is a good foil for
Carrey and the two play oft’ each
other quite well. Added to the
mix are cameos by such people
as Janeane Garofalo, Eric
Roberts and Andy Dick. Directed
by the talented Ben Stiller, this is
a can’t miss flick!
