The Georgia Gardener’s Guide
by Walter Reeves and
Erica Glasener
Reviewed by Daryl Pulis
The question most frequently
asked at our local University of
Georgia Extension Office is prob
ably, “What can I grow in all tips
red clay?” This question is closely
followed by “How do I?” The
Georgia Gardener’s Guide
answers both questions and many
more.
When I first heard that Walter
Reeves and Erica Glasener had
teamed up to write a book about
gardening in Georgia, I knew that
it would be a boon to local gar
deners. Those who have listened
to “The Lawn and Garden Show
with Walter Reeves” on WSB
radio know that the combined
knowledge of this pair is phenom
enal. The wit with which they
deliver it makes it worth setting
the alarm for the bleary-eye hour
of six in the morning every
Saturday. Their recently published
Georgia Gardener’s Guide com
bines these qualities in full mea
sure.
The Georgia Gardener’s Guide
is a comprehensive guide to main
taining a beautiful landscape and
one of the few written specifically
for our area. It is not an exhaus
tive list of every plant that grows
in Georgia, but gives the gardener
a wide choice of landscape plants.
Every category is covered from
the ground up, from lawns
through flowers, shrubs, and vines
to trees. Within each section some
of the best plants for our area are
suggested. Complete planting and
care instructions are included and
companion plants are also often
suggested.
Each plant is keyed by both
common and scientific name. A
section called “The Name Game”
gently explains that the scientific
name is necessary to ensure that
the plant you want is the plant you
get. As an example, Erica men
tions that when she moved to
Georgia, “I wondered what it was
that people were calling a ‘wild
honeysuckle.’ “ Was it the weedy
vine or the blooming bush with
which I was familiar? It turned
out to be neither! These native
gardeners were referring to their
native azaleas as ‘wild honey
suckle.’”

is presented with a description of
each plant and a summary of its
good and bad points. Os the
Bradford Pear they write, “The
rapid growth of this tree can lead
to devastating limb breakage in
ice and wind storms. It is not
uncommon to see a tree split in
half by the weight of a limb that
was weakly attached to the main
trunk.” Though they also concede,
“The sight of billowing white
clouds of flowers close to the
earth on a warm April day can
take your breath away.” They then
explain how to train the tree to
avoid the disastrous limb break
age.
For each plant, complete planti
ng and care directions are given.
For a newly planted shrub they
might say, “Apply one tablespoon
of fertilizer in March, June and
August.” Turning to the informa
tion about each plant in your land
scape is easy. For those who wish
more information, separate chap
ters take the mystery out of fertil
izers, composting and pruning.
Color photographs of the 170 fea
tured plants have their own sec
tion in the book, as does a list of
Georgia gardens that are open to
the public.
The Georgia Gardener’s Guide
is written by people who obvious
ly love gardening and wish to
share it. It is a joy to read, and its
value as a handy reference makes
it a “must have” for homeowners
and gardeners.
