4-H honors, including members of the year, awarded at annual banquet
Forsyth County 4-H held their
annual awards banquet recently
at The Sawnee Community
Center Highlights of the event
included the naming of 4-H
Members of the Year, scholar
ship recipients, Friend of 4-H,
and other awards.
The 4-H Members of the Year
were: Anna Phillips, Ashley
White, Laura Fitzgerald, Emily
Teatro, Micah Fauscett, and
Carolyn Smith. They were each
awarded a SSO U.S. Savings
Bond from Hansard Insurance
Agency. Scott Hansard was on
hand to present the savings
bonds. For this award, members
receive points for various 4-H
activities. The 4-H’ers with the
highest point total receive the
awards.
Carolyn Smith, a senior at
North Forsyth High School,
received the prestigious Walter
H. Rucker Achievement
Scholarship for her leadership

over the past two years. This
award is named after a retired
Forsyth County Extension
Agent, and is the highest local
award a 4-H’er can receive.
Carolyn in the daughter of Gail
and Harold Smith of Cumming.
Nathan Crook was the recipi
ent of the Scot Born Memorial
Scholarship. This award is
made to a 4-H’er who exhibits
good leadership, citizenship,
and community service quali
ties.
Nathan is a senior at North
Forsyth High School, and is the
son of Sharon and Ray Crook.
The “I Dare You” Leadership
was awarded to Rachel Panter.
This award, sponsored by the
American Youth Foundation, is
made to youth who have shown
leadership and service poten
tial. Rachel is a junior at
Forsyth Central High School.
Two 4-H’ers received the
Georgia 4-H Key Award -
Karla Kunz and Julie Ditmore.
This award recognizes 4-H
members who have given sig
nificant leadership and citizen
ship service in their 4-H clubs
and their communities.
Sandra Bottoms, a parent and
4-H volunteer, received the
Friend of 4-H Award for her
hard work and enthusiastic sup
port of 4-H in Forsyth County.
Jannie Barrett and Eddie
Condor, of the South Forsyth,
Rotary Club, presented a check’
for S7OO to sponsor a trip for
one Forsyth County 4-H’er to
attend Citizenship-Washington
Focus (CWF). CWF is a pro
gram of the National 4-H
Council which gives training in
government and civic affairs. It
is held annually at the National
4-H Center in Washington, D.C.
The outstanding project club
participant for this year was
Thomas Waite of the 4-H Aces

BB Team. Thomas’ consistent
sharp shooting helped the team
to improve their standings in the
state competition each year he
has participated. The award was
announced by volunteer BB
coach Chris Sagar.
In addition to these special
awards, 4-H’ers who competed
at the 4-H District Project
Achievement Contest, District
and State 4-H BB Match, or a
District 4-H judging contest
were also recognized with a cer
tificate and/or trophy. In all, 53
4-H’ers received awards, with
several receiving awards for
more than one activity.
The final event of the evening
was the installation of the 1997-
98 4-H Council Officers con
ducted by Master 4-H’er Jannie
Barrett. The new officers are
Nathan Crook, President;
Carolyn Smith, Vice President;
Rachel Panter, Secretary; and
Julie Ditmore, Treasurer.
The 4-H program is sponsored
in all counties of Georgia by
