; The 14 local social services
agencies funded by the United
Way of Forsyth County shouldn’t
have to worry about operating
expenses for at least another year.

To celebrate the organization’s
.* fastest fund-raising success, United
Way volunteer leaders came
together Wednesday at their annu

luncheon, and “success” was the
word of the day.
; The 1998 campaign, which

pledges totaling $512,433

goal and topping last year’s cam

, could go on and on,” Booker said.
In the restaurant division,
’ chaired by Bill Norman, Booker
recognized Norman’s Landing for
its pledge of $35,000, and she
praised the Smart Corporation for
their $12,000 in pledges, saying
the company which has just
moved to the county “was very
gracious to open its doors.”
Government employees got into
the spirit of giving as well.

Teachers, administrators and
other workers in the Forsyth
County School System pledged
almost $39,000. “A number of the
schools had 100 percent participa
tion by the teachers and staff,”
Booker said.
Dr. Robert Jolly, who chaired
the campaign among area pastors
and churches, was recognized for
having “gone the extra mile” in
exceeding that division’s goal of
$2,500 by 429 percent. A golf
tournament he organized brought
in SII,OOO.
Other volunteer chairs were also
recognized with plaques, includ
ing: Commerce & Industry -
Carter Barrett, Joni Booker,
Rebecca Carey, Holly Maxwell,
Ann Crow; Schools - Linda Lang,
Dr. Allene Magill; Retail - Bill
Schubert, Roger Swofford;
Attorneys - Angie Martin;
Finance - Tim Perry; Medical and
Hospitals - John Herron, Barbara
Noon; Insurance - Nancy
Mcßrayer; Real Estate - Debra
Long Bradley; Accountants -
Mary
Beth Grenner, James Wheeler;
Leadership - Sid Priestman,
Dennis Stockton; Pacesetter -
Robert Shepherd; Marketing -
Phil Bettis; Training - James
Hasten, Lucie Neely; Local
Government - Sheriff Denny
Hendrix, Don Major.
“Thank you from the bottom of
my heart,” Booker said to all the
volunteers, with a special word of
thanks to 1997 United Way
President Dennis Stockton, whose
support she said had been “criti
cal: I called him every day.”
“She honestly did call me every
day to give me my to-do list,”
Stockton joked, before turning his
comments to a more serious note:
“I can’t tell you how rewarding it
has been to help in taking the
United Way from where it started
to where it is today.”
Stockton pointed to the United
Way’s recent purchase of a mov
ing van for The Place as an exam
ple of how the donations “stay at
home.”
“That’s the rewarding part
turning over the keys,” Stockton
said. “We could not have done
that four years ago.”
This year’s campaign exceeded
the last in another area as well. To
encourage higher individual con
tributions, the United Way created
a leadership circle in recent years,
which provides special recogni
tion to those who donate at least
SSOO.
More than 100 individuals
joined that circle during the 1998
campaign generating approxi
mately $85,000 in donations and
representing an increase of almost
$20,000 in the division over the
1997.
According to United Way execu
tive director Terry Borges, it was
that level of “strong leadership in
the community,” together with the
leadership of Stockton, Booker
and others “which resulted in a
very strong and successful cam
paign.”
Borges told the volunteers they
should be proud of their accom
plishments: Because of the
“thread of the United Way, we
can leave with smiles on our faces
and warmth in our heart for a job
well done.”
