Nibert is state certified for
Level I and II erosion inspection
and is working on his federal cer
tification.
He also gives lectures on the
fundamentals of soil and erosion
control.
“Erosion control is basically
stopping the soil from moving,”
said Nibert. “Sediment control is
stopping the sediment once it’s
moved.”
Sediment which rolls into
creeks depletes the oxygen supply,
which can kill the fish. Silt also
washes down banks filling in
pools which are fish habitats.
“Stopping erosion before sedi
ment moves is more effective
since it prevents the problem
before any negative impact,” said
Nibert.
Six basic principles are listed
in the erosion control manual pub
lished by the state soil and water
conservation committee. These
include site design that works with
the natural topography and soils;
reducing area exposure and dura
tion; immediate stabilization of
the eroded area; retaining runoff
and sediment; and stopping
encroachment on waterways.
Erosion is generally affected
by four elements - climate, topog
raphy, soils and vegetative cover,
according to the manual.
