i .Check out some tax strategy funds
Your financial professional has
probably talked to you about your
unreal rate of return.” It’s what you
fgct to keep after paying taxes on
your investment income.
Most people typically overlook
taxes when comparing investment
.returns. They also don’t think
'about capital gains taxes - the tax
you owe if you make a profit on
jm investment. The best way to
'avoid capital gains tax is not to

with mutual funds, taxes

lifunds generally do not pay

income generated within the fund
are passed on to shareholders,
who must pay taxes on them.
Even if you select to have divi

for die year in which they occur.

portfolio turnover. TUmover refers
to the selling of investments with
in a fund. Each time a mutual
fund sells an investment and real
izes a gain, a taxable event
occurs. High turnover typically
occurs more frequently in aggres
sive growth funds than in more
conservative funds that buy and
hold securities for longer periods.
You can find a fund’s turnover
rate in its prospectus
That takes care of taxes on capi
tal gains within a mutual fund, but
what about taxes on your mutual
fund dividends? Another way
some funds are attempting to
increase net after-tax return to
shareholders is through tax strate
gy funds. For example, one such
fund invests 40 percent to 50 per
cent of its assets in tax-exempt
bonds.
While investing part of a mutual
fund portfolio in tax-free securi
ties can increase returns to share
holders, it takes a knowledgeable
investor to appreciate its value. In
performance comparisions, tax
registration at the seminar S4O
is space is available. This semi
nar contains pre-venture infor
mation on the basics of starting
and maintaining a new busi
ness. A “How to Start Manual”
is included in this course.
This course is designed pri
marily for persons who are con
sidering starting a new busi
ness, it presents information of
value to a prospective entrepre
neur and includes an overview
of legal, marketing, and finan
cial considerations and compo
sition of a useful business plan.

ed that majority of the home
owners have some type of cred
it problems that prohibits them
from obtaining mortgage loans
from other lending institutions.
Typically, these homeowners
range from lower income to
professionals holding mort
gages up to $450,000. Mafiy
have experienced temporary
unemployment, family emer
gencies or uncontrollable situa
tions that result in poor credit.
Quoting Pete Brown, Vice
President of the Georgia

Mortgage understands that
credit problems do not make

financial difficulties sometime
in their lives. We, at EquiPrime,
want to make a difference in
those people’s lives."

strategy funds are often grouped
with funds that allocate 60 per
cent to stocks and 40 percent to
taxable bonds. Because stocks
and taxable bonds generally pro
vide higher rates of return (before
taxes) than tax-exempt bonds, the
performance figures of tax strate
gy funds pale by comparision.
But when taxes are figured in, the
tax strategy funds move up con
siderably in performance rank
ings.
This is another example of the
importance of clearly identifying
your objective before investing. If
taxes are of no consequence to
you, go for total return. Look for
funds that offer the highest
income and gains within your nsk
requirements. On the other hand,
if you’d like to minimize taxes,
ask your financial professional
about tax strategy funds.
