This Week in Fishing
Lake Lanier fishing is improving
Lake Lanier Fishing Report
for Feb. 4,1998
Lake Sidney Lanier is full and
the lake water temperature is 51
degrees.
The main lake is clear and the
creeks and the upper rivers are
stained.
The best day for fishing will be
Sun., Feb. 8, from 4 p.m. until 6
p.m.
BLACK BASS fishing has
been fair and there are some
shallow fish that can be caught.
Bass are moving right on the
banks in the backs of the creeks,
where the water is warming from
the day-long sunlight. They are
on the hard clay banks and it’s
important to make long casts to
get the fish to strike.
Silver and black-back
Bombers, and Bang A Lures in
the small sizes, look like the bait
fish the bass are feeding on. The
key is to use the light line on a
spinning reel and then cast these
baits right on the bank.
Alternate baits will be u-tail
worms, small shad crank baits
and jigs to coax a strike. Adding
some extra scent will help on
any one of these lures.
Use the Zoom u-tail worm in
natural blue or all black on a
light Texas rig. Be sure to fish
the baits slowly and hit any
heavy cover, staying in it as long
as possible.
Early each day, use a 3/16-
ounce weight to force this bait
deep into the cover on wood and
around docks.
Stanley’s 1/2-ounce all- black
jig, and the old black eel by
Uncle Josh, are solid winter
lures for the lake’s bass popula
tion.
With the cold rain, stay in the
deeper waters at depths of 8 to
20 feet. With the cold water, use
some Berkley Strike bass scent.
Spoons in and over the deep
trees, in the middle of the major
creeks, are holding schools of
bait fish as well as bass.
The Hopkins spoon is a good
winter spooning tool and use 12
or 14-pound Stren Magna Thin
line on a stiff bait casting rods.
Spoon hooks should be changed

to light wire.
This will allow the spoon to be
retrieved if it gets hung up in the
structure.
Any old standing timber on the
deeper points and creek bends
hold bass.
SPOTTED BASS are on main
lake and secondary points, docks
and in the standing timber.
Use the small green Zoom
finesse worm, 1/2-ounce Flex-it
spoons and Zoom’s Creepy
Crawler. The better spotted bass
are on the deep main lake points
and ledges, and depths are from
19 to 35 feet.
Don’t overlook a hump on the
main lake that tops out around
30 feet.
Old road beds that run through
out the entire lake are great spot
ted bass locations almost all
year. Lots of schoolers spend
most of their lives in and around
road beds.
Look on the deep sides with
natural brush for these wintering
spots. Brush and deep cover are
keys and there are some spots
bitting on man-made brush on
the deeper banks.
These fish are still cold, so fish
baits slowly.
Zoom’s Smoky Joe and the
watermelon seed worms in the
finesse styles are being used on a
Texas rig. Use the standard 3/16-
ounce weight and add a bead to
create clicking sounds.
The Bulldog Cricket jig in
browns and blacks are fair. Use
the smaller #lOl Uncle Josh
trailer. Dark colors are best in
the deeper waters and stay with
light 8-pound test Stren Sensor
lines on spinning reels.
STRIPERS are up both rivers
and the amount of stained waters
flowing into the lake will dictate
the strikes.
The shad populations are deep.
With a warming trend, the
stripers will occasional surface,
feeding off the river’s main cuts
and coves. Just watch for any
swirls, which can be right next to
the banks.
The major schools are around
Holly Park and Gainesville
Marina on the Chattahoochee

sides and from Little Hall Park
to Johnson Creek up the
Chestatee River.
It’s important to use a Eagle
liquid crystal graph, to find not
only the stripers, but the shad.
But be sure to keep any live bait,
shad, trout or bream to medium
sizes. If the spoons are used, go
to the 1/2 ounce Flex-it and hop
it slowly right in their sight.
It’s going to be cold all week
with ever-changing weather con
ditions, but a warm-up always
follows and by week’s end, look
for better conditions.
Live bait and down lines are
fair. Watch for limited surface
activity. Live bait needs to be on
a 3-foot Carolina rig and the
heavier weights are allowing the
baits to get deep faster.
It’s worth using cut bait for the
bank anglers.
The ramps on or close to the
creek’s channels can draw a big
fish. When boaters finish a fish
ing trip, many dump their baits
out right at these ramps and the
stripers can get an easy meal.
Keep an eye on the sea gulls and
the loons. They are cheap fish
finders.
CRAPPIE are slow all over the
lake and they are deep. Some
fish have been spooned out of 30
feet of water while spooning for
bass.
Live bait has been slow. Using
dark tube jigs and small hair jigs
on light line is the key. Silver
Thread’s AN4O 4 and 6-pound
test line are very small in diame
ter and the lines are very strong.
Use the smallest tube jigs by
the Creme lure company and the
1/32-ounce lead head by
Renegade.
Fish these tiny baits in greens
and banana colors and add some
type of fish scent for a few more
strikes.

second shot, his only points of
the game.
North broke the Gator press and
brought the ball down the court.
After missing two shots, Wildcat
forward Brad Boudreaux was
fouled on his follow-up shot and
sent to the line with 6.2 seconds
left. Boudreaux hit the second
free throw to give North a 31-30
lead.
But Green then took the ensuing
outlet pass and drove down the
court untouched to lay the ball in
at the buzzer, giving the Gators
the narrow victory.
“When it was crunch time, he
answered the challenge,” said
Vickery of Green. Regarding
Southard, he added, “Tommy is
the man that makes us go -
throughout the whole tournament,
he played outstanding.”
The Gators led 14-12 at the half,
but North took a two-point lead at
the end of the third.
In the fourth, both teams put on
a free throw exhibition. The
GIRLS from IB
goal gave the Gators a 27-25
lead with 1:15 left in the game.
Free throws posed a problem for
Dawson. Katrina Beck had her
only two points of the night when
she hit two free throws at 1:05 to
tie the game at 27. Dessica
Westbrook and Kristen Hardin
both had chances to win the game
in regulation, but missed all of
their foul shots.
In overtime, it was a different
story for the Lady Tigers. Free
throws saved the game for them.
Tourney MVP Megan Reser went
2-for-2 from the line and
Westbrook scored all four of her
overtime points on free throws to
give Dawson the title.
Anderson had all four of the
Gators’ overtime points on jump
shots, the last with 1:02 left to
pull South within two.
South struck first on another
Anderson jump shot. The Lady
Tigers answered when Reser put
in a shot from under the basket
and fouled. She made the ensuing
free throw.

one point in the first quarter,

South’s three second-quarter

Tim Strickland and Dusty
Mathis each had seven points for
the Wildcats.
“We had a good year,” Light
said. “We played them three times
and beat them twice.
Unfortunately, we didn’t do it
when it really counted.”
Along with Green, the All-
Tournament team included
Southard, Mathis, Lumpkin’s
Matt Swymer, Otwell’s Josh
Abbott and Dawson’s Ethan
Henson.
Lumpkin gets third
The Indians of Lumpkin County
ran out to an 8-2 first-quarter lead
and took third in the tourney by
beating Otwell, 35-21.
Lumpkin led at the half, 21-11,
and 32-15 after three quarters
before the ‘Pups outscored them
6-3 in the final stanza.
Chris Osnes and Bill Clark each
had six for Otwell.
Otwell is third
The Lady Bullpups had a great
end to their season when they
trounced Lumpkin County, 33-9,
to get third in their own tourney.
Otwell, coached by Scott
McFarland, took a 14-2 lead after
a quarter and was never headed.
They also poured in seven in the
second period and 10 in the
fourth.
Haley Peek paced the effort with
10 points, while Veronica Wells,
Shannon Daniell, Brandy Johnson
and Katie Williams each had four.
Peek poured in eight in the first
quarter alone.
Eight players scored and almost
everyone played for the Lady
