Michelle Kwan: Going for the Gold
Michelle Kwan understands the old
axiom that it’s easier to get to the top than
it is to stay there. Kwan was just 15 when
she won the women’s figure skating
National and World Championships in
1996. Renowned for her poise, artistry
and athleticism, Kwan was favored to
retain her titles last year, but lost to Tara
Lipinski, a 14-year-old dynamo. Those

pense drama about a criminal (Bruce
Payne) who masterminds the midair
hijacking of a commercial airliner.
Snipes stars as the almost-retired
anti-terrorist expert who tries to stop
him. The film also stars Tom

Elizabeth Hurley and Robert Hooks.
TRIVIA
Jim Nantz, co-host
of CBS' Olympics
coverage, earned a
degree in radio and
Tv at the University
of Houston, where
he was on the golf
team.
At the 1984
Winter Games in
Sarajevo, brothers
Phil and Steve
Mahre won the gold
and silver medals,
respectively, in
men's slalom skiing.
Until last year, Kwan had been touted
as a future Olympic champion since age
12. She began skating when she was 5,
was 7 when she won her first competi
tion, and 11 when she competed in the
U.S. Junior Championships. Bored in
the Juniors, she took the test enabling
her to move up without telling her coach.
Although he was initially furious, she
moved up quickly in the Seniors. Her
break-out performance at 15 came at
Skate America, where she portrayed the
temptress Salome.
“The music was always in the back
ground,” she tells February’s Biography
magazine. “But this time around, I was
the music.” The judges agreed, and she
won, going on to capture the ‘96 Worlds
and National championships. But
somehow, without knowing why, Kwan
lost her self- confidence. “I wasn’t think
ing T can do this,”’ she relates. “I was
thinking ‘I don’t want to fail’.” When
Olympian Scot Hamilton was diagnosed
with testicular cancer, she regained her
perspective, reminding herself that ulti
mately skating was about having fun.
More relaxed, she bounced back, plac
ing second in the Nationals. “Winning,
standing on the podium, smiling—that’s
the easy part,” she says. ‘Taking defeat
and being able to pull yourself back
together to try to be on the podium again
is more difficult” For the upcoming
Olympics, Kwan aims to be standing on
