The Corporate Member of the
Year Award went to Prestige
Cable for its involvement and sup
port of the community. “They
jumped in with both feet,” said
Shepherd.
Volunteer of the Year Award
went to Cindy Wheeler, who
served on the chamber’s board of
directors as secretary/treasurer.
“Under her leadership, we
were able to get a real handle on
where the money was,” Shepherd
said.
In addition, Wheeler helped
with Leadership Forsyth and is a
long-time member of the board,
serving in other capacities as well.
As his final award, Shepherd
presented the Chairman’s Award

long hours, all while pregnant
with their son.
Shepherd cited the highlights
of 1997. “The one thing I’m the
proudest of this year is ... the
school system. You’re nothing
without educated children.”
During 1997, the chamber rec
ognized corporate Partners in
Education with a luncheon and
now have as members every
school in the system.
Chamber president Pat
Topping thanked the chamber staff
and the committee chairs for their
hard work. “We could not do any
thing without volunteers,” he said,
adding that 4,000 volunteer hours

with transportation, water and
sewer and labor jn the county.
Mary Helen McGruder offered
a look forward to the chamber of
1998. “We have an obligation to
make Forsyth County great,” she
said.
Listing similarities between
herself and Charles Welch she
said, “It was a love of Forsyth
County that led us both to the
chamber.”
Then adding to the chamber’s
slogan of “The right place at the
right time,” McGruder said. “This
is the best place at any time.”
