First time for Eagles
with AA Area IV
By Stephen Underwood

For the first time ever this weekend, an Area
wrestling championship meet will come to South
Forsyth High School.
The War Eagles will serve as the host school for
the 1998 Class A A Area IV meet, with action
beginning Friday evening (6 p.m.) in the new gym
and continuing through Saturday evening.
Wrestling starts Saturday morning (10 a.m.)
with semifinals. Finals are expected to go off at 7
p.m.
With a number of top teams coming in and
the War Eagles eyeing a potential title, a handful
of area titles and several state qualifiers there
will unquestionably be a lot of great wrestling for
fans to see.
“It’s definitely a strong field for an area tourna
ment,” said veteran South mentor John Allen.
“Morgan County is generally considered the
favorite, but we’ve got a good chance as well.”
“And there’s a lot of strong individuals on some

Raiders are veterans
hosting big fields

Home is a familiar place for the North Forsyth
wrestling team, whether it be in dual meets or big
invitationals - which the Raider boosters and fac
ulty have nearly down to a science.
But this Saturday, as the Class A Area IV meet
returns to Coal Mountain, head coach Jim
Bishop’s team will return to surroundings not
recently visited.
Indeed, after several meets at the old North
Middle gym, the area meet will be held in the
grand confines of Raider Arena, where a big
crowd can be expected to gather to see if North
can defend its title.
The meet begins at 10 a.m. Saturday, with the
finals expected to take place in early evening.
But it won’t be easy, despite the fact that the
Raiders continue to be ranked No. 1 in the Class
A state wrestling poll.
“It’s tough,” said Bishop. “Dawson County and
Jefferson will be strong, and Riverside could

Bulldogs back |
in the race after
routing Pickens
By Alton Bridges
Sports Correspondent
The Pickens County boys bas
ketball team brought their 7-0
region mark and brand new Class
AA No. 10 ranking to Forsyth
Central Tuesday night, looking to
improve on both.
After a dismal loss at South
Forsyth last Saturday, the
Bulldogs had other plans.
When the game was over,
Central had pounded the Dragons,
76-54 and the game was not
close after the score was tied at
two.
With the win, the Bulldogs
improved their season record to 8-
12 and jumped right back in the
thick of the Region 7-AA race at
5-3. They are tied for third, 1/2-
game behind White County after
the Warriors beat South Tuesday.

Inconsistency and problems on
the road continue, unfortunately,
to clip the wings of the otherwise
high-flying South Forsyth boys
basketball team this season.
Three days after a 33-point win
over Forsyth Central, the War
Eagles went up to White County
to strengthen their hold on second
place in Region 7-AA. Instead
they came back with an 80-78
defeat that knocked them back to
a tie for third.
South’s Ken Dixon set a new
school record with 32 points, but
he was more than matched by
Warrior Matthew Sieveking’s 39.
With some key players in foul
trouble, the War Eagles lost a 24-
13 first-quarter lead by the end of
the third stanza and got in a hole
too deep to overcome.
“All of our big people got two
fouls and we started to play
checkers,” said South head coach
