third extra session.
Jaylor, Turner and Hartsfield
barely held onto the Open ‘A’ lead
with a 60-57 win over the
Raiders.
,Chad Jones had 21 and Jason
Smith 16 for TTH, while the
Raiders were led by Ernie
Fahrnbauer’s 16 and Jeff
Henderson’s 15.
With Ed Spurka (13) and Wes
Blanton (11) leading the way, the
Bandits took a lopsided verdict
over W.F.0., 71-26. Tim Wyatt
had eight for the losers.

Coming off a low-scoring game,
Katie Vaughan bounced back
with a strong 22, including seven
in the first quarter as South took a
15-12 lead.
Lisa Sibenaller gave plenty of
support with 19 points, while
Jennifer Thompson added seven
points and eight rebounds.
Unfortunately, it has been
learned that a painful injury
Thompson has been nursing is
actually a broken hand and Blake
said the sharp-shooting junior
will be out the rest of the season
-a huge blow to the Lady Eagles.
White got offensive firepower
from senior standouts Candace
Trammell and Audrey Shapiro,
who hit for 25 and 24 points
respectively. Lindsey Parramore,
also a senior, added 10.
After hitting just l-of-3 free
(11 points), Carlos Jimenez (8)
and Derek Drew (8).
But the visitors got few other
points inside and couldn’t stop

Harmony Grove Baptist went
over .500 regular-season with a
high-scoring 86-65 triumph over
Oak Grove Baptist.
Jonathan Bennett was again a
leader with 26 points, while Bruce
Thomas added 17. Matt Payne
matched the game-high for Oak
Grove with 26 and Chad Jones
had 21.

throws in the first three quarters,
White was 13-for-18 in the
fourth. Trammell and Shapiro had
19 of their team’s 23 point in the
final period, 13 coming from the
stripe.
But the quarter that really got
South was the second, when the
hosts outscored them 24-13 to
take a 36-28 lead at the break.
“They had a good second quarter
and we had a bad one,” said
Blake. “We really just got sloppy
for four minutes.”
With Sibenaller getting eight of
her points, however, South
brought it back to 48-44 at the
next break. Then they drew even
in the final stanza and battled
back and forth.
“We told them they just need to
run what they know how to do,”
said Blake. “We tied it and took
the lead ... but then we had to foul
and they hit them.”
The Lady Eagles hit just 9-for
-18 from the line themselves.
South has a tough date at Class
AA state No. 4 Pickens County
Friday night then will try and
avenge their loss to Central
Saturday, this time on the Lady
Bulldogs’ court.

South now must travel to
Pickens Friday night and Central
Saturday - and they must stay
on track if they are to get a high
seed for the region tournament.

First Christian won its opener

Mark Coffman led the winners
with 16 points and Tim Powell

Closer is better for FC girls vs. Pickens

Coming off the hard-to-beat
high of topping county rival South
Forsyth a few days earlier, the
Forsyth Central girls basketball
team had a tough assignment
Tuesday with the fourth-ranked
Class AA team in the state com
ing in.
But although the Lady Bulldogs
lost to Region 7-AA foe Pickens
County, 86-43, progress could
still be measured.
“The players did a lot better than
they did the last time we played
them,” said Central head coach
Belinda Price, whose team fell by
82 to the Dragonettes in
December. “We are just coming
off a big victory and to play

“When Mark Fields came in, he
played good defense and gave the
team a much needed spark.”
For the losing Dragons,
Jeremiah Boswell had 19 points,
but team leader Robert Shutts was
held to eight.
In the opening quarter,
VanderHoff scored the first two
points for Central and Brady
Bums of Pickens scored to tie it.
But the Dogs then scored the next
five points when Shugart had a
field goal and Vanderhoff hit a 3-
pointer. Early in the quarter,
Central had a 10-point lead and
led by eight at the end.
Donofrio had six points in the
quarter and Tatum had four to go
with Vanderhoff’s five.
Central scored 18 points in the
second, including four 3-pointers.
Fields led off the quarter with a
triple and Shugart, VanderHoff
and Tatum soon followed. The
Dogs had a 39-26 lead at the half.
Then Shugart scored five points
and Tatum had another triple to
help Central take a 21-point lead
in the third quarter before Pickens
could get on the scoreboard.
Shugart had a nine-point quarter
and the tenacious Bulldogs’
defense allowed Pickens just eight
points in the quarter.
Going into the fourth quarter,
Central led 57-34.

Lady Eagle ninth-grade improves to 6-3

The South Forsyth Lady War
Eagles freshman basketball team
improved their record to 6-3 by
defeating Forsyth Central Lady
Bulldogs, 31-7, Saturday at
South.
“We pulled away early and were
able to play all the girls,” said
South coach Randy Wolford.
“Jennifer Razzouk controlled the
second half of the game for the
point guard position and did a
good job running a time-con
trolled offense. Late in the game
Sarah Wedlake forced Central into
two turnovers.”

against one of the best teams in

Amanda Coffield led the scoring
for Central with 14 points and
four super 3-pointers. Sara Levis
and Kim McLeod both put in
eight points and Misty Bethany
had a strong game with six.
For Pickens, Alison Thomason
had 17 points, Keisha Hall had 15
and Katie Frye had 13.
The Dragonettes scored the first
ten points of the game before
McLeod hit a triple with 4:31 left
in the opening quarter. Levis
scored four points in the quarter,
but Pickens scored 24, including
two triples by Jenny Cain and
seven points by Hall. The Lady
Bulldogs had nine points at the
end of the quarter.

straight free throws. Tatum scored
his second triple in the game and
Travis Elmore scored three,
including the last two points in
the game.
The Dogs play next at Gilmer
County Friday and return home
with a chance to avenge last
week’s loss to South Saturday.
JVs win on Payne’s
buzzer beater
In the junior varsity game, the
Bulldogs defeated the Dragons
47-44 in a thriller.
With the score tied at 44 and
10.6 seconds remaining in the
game, the Bulldogs had problems
getting the ball upcourt. But with
just two seconds left, Jon Payne
took a pass, turned and shot from
just inside the mid-court line.
The buzzer sounded with the
ball in the air and the next sound
was the ball going through the
strings for three points and the
victory. Then bedlam.
John Poulos led Central in scor
ing with 11 points. Slate Amos
had ten points, Brent Howell and
Adam Buice eight, James Otwell
and Payne had five and Daniel
Rogers three —a triple in the
third quarter.
In the first quarter, Pickens took
victory for the Lady War Eagles
9th-graders.
Stephanie Pass scored 12 points
and Melissa Cullinan added 11 in
the victory for South. CC Retteke
had 10 rebounds.
In the first two quarters, South
outscored Central 15-2 and 9-2.
In the second half, the South
freshman scored seven points, but
Central scored only three.
The Lady Eagles also defeated
the Woodstock basketball team
42-29 Friday at Woodstock.
Cullinan led the way with 17
points and Pass had nine for
South. Stephanie Hendricks had
seven rebounds.

for Central. At the half Pickens
led 49-22.
In the third quarter, Pickens was
held to 19 points while the Lady
Dogs scored 15. McLeod had
another triple and Coffield had
two triples in the quarter.
But in the last quarter, the visi
tors extended their lead by scoring
17 points, while Central scored
only six including the last 3-
pointer of the game by Coffield.
Central has another tough match
against Gilmer County Friday
night, then will host South
Saturday.

the White County Warriors, 55-
31, in Cleveland last Friday.

both had 12 points and Buice had
eight.
The Bulldogs got off to a good
start and ted 20-8 at the end of the
first quarter. Payne scored three
triples to spark the Bulldogs’
quick start.
In the second quarter, White
scored five points and Central
scored 14. Again, Payne scored a
triple. At the end of the first half,
the Dogs led, 34-13.
In the third quarter, White again
scored five points and Central 12,
but in the last quarter, White
outscored Central, 13-9. Buice
had a triple in the last quarter for
Central.

went on a 9-6 run and closed to
within six points of the Lady War
Eagles. But in the last quarter,
South outscored them 15-10 for
the victory.
