Bat Masterson: Man of Many
(Derby) Hats
If the name Bat Masterson conjures
up only images of a Western dandy tra

towns (and ‘sos TV screens) with cane

Bat was a plainsman and deadly gun
man, a boomtown sheriff and, of all
things, a New York sportswriter.
According to February's Biography

Theodore Roosevelt and Damon

of Miss Sarah Brown,” that became
“Guys and Dolls.” Actor Gene Barry
may have created the urbane, cultivat
ed character we think of as Bat, but
the real man was far more multi
faceted (and, yes, he did wear a
derby).
Bom in Canada in 1853, he came
with his parents and six siblings as a
pioneer to America. At 18, he headed
to Kansas to hunt buffalo. During one
of the Indians’ unsuccessful attempts
to rid the ranges of the hated white
hunters, he gained fame as the
youngest and one of the most valuable
defenders of the Texan trading post,
Adobe Walls. Bat clinched his reputa
tion as a deadly marksman when he
shot in self-defense a jealous corporal
who tried to gun him down over a
dance-hall girl. He took a bullet
through the hip, adopting his trade
mark cane while recovering.
In 1877, he was elected sheriff of
Ford County, including Dodge City,
and worked with Wyatt Earp. When
he lost a second election, he became
an itinerant gambler. He also became
involved in the growing sport of pro
fessional boxing, sometimes acting as
referee or purse-holder. In 1902, he
headed to New York and became a
sportswriter. In the end, Bat died not
with his boots on, but at his newspa
per desk, expiring from a heart attack
in 1921 at the age of 67.
