GROCERY HOLDERS The
HOME TIPS is so useful. I especial
ly liked the rubber bands for opening
bottle tops. Here’s one for you to

TANGLED PLASTIC WRAP
The most frustrating experience for
me is to get a roll of plastic wrap
that’s all glued together.
My last experiment with this
proved to be a success. I took the roll
out of the box and rubbed it up and
down very fast. Remember, VERY,
VERY fast and it came apart and
worked. It must be the friction.

TWEEZER TIP As a first
grade teacher, I deal with shoelaces
tied in knots on a daily basis.
I have found a pair of tweezers to
be an essential tool in pulling the
knot loose in those tiny shoestrings.
Many 6-year-old smiles of relief
have rewarded this simple discovery.

RECYCLING CARDS
Another good use for front of old
Christmas cards: Put on top of a
' wrapped package. Tape or tie on with
ribbon. It’s really neat and easy.

Household Help
by John Amantea
If your house could talk, it might
be crying for water. During the win
ter heating season, dry indoor air can
suck enough moisture from floors
and furniture, paneling and pianos to
do permanent damage.
If your home is showing any of
the following signs, it’s a good bet
your house needs added humidity:
* Splits or cracks in woodwork or
walls.
on the road to drum up business, the
duo must outwit conniving family
members (Bo Derek, Rob Lowe) and a
ruthless rival (Dan Aykroyd).

* Wooden doors that show gaps,
or that no longer fit tightly.
* Gaps between the boards in
hardwood floors.
* Widening joints in cabinets or
wooden paneling.
* Loose or wobbly chair legs and
arms.
* Pianos that don’t stay in tune.
What causes all this damage?
Wood shrinkage. The wood structure
of a typical new 2,100-square foot
home contains an astounding 635
gallons of water. As long as the
indoor humidity level stays around
35 percent, the moisture content of
the wood remains pretty much con
stant.
However, during the heating sea
son, the relative humidity of a home’s
indoor air may plummet to 13 per
cent or less. That’s drier than Death
Valley!
That super-dry air steals moisture
wherever it can find it from walls,
floors, furniture. And, as wood loses
moisture, some species may shrink
more than seven percent, according
to the U.S. Forest Products
Laboratory.
The best way to get the right
humidity all the time is to use a
whole house humidifier with an auto
matic control system. Check your
local hardware outlets for recommen
dations.
