BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER
Viewers who have discovered this

slot will want to catch “The Dark
Age,” a tense repeat episode in which
a murder victim is found to have a
link to Giles’ (Anthony Stewart Head)
past, and Ms. Calendar (Robia
LaMorte) is possessed by a demon.
Sarah Michelle Gellar and David
Boreanaz also star.

JILL JACKSON'S HOLLYWOOD
HOLLYWOOD AWARDS!
AWARDS! AWARDS! That’s all anyone
hears right now, and somewhere, some
how, SOMEBODY’S going to have to
put a clamp on, and SCREAM
“ENUF ALREADY!” Since late last
year, there’s been an award for almost
everything, almost everybody, with more
cornin’ up! NOW, Robert Redford is set
to receive the first annual CHEESE
HEAD AWARD at the Wisconsin Film
Festival in October. This to a—“ Motion
Picture luminary whose professional
accomplishments are matched by per
sonal dignity that necessarily includes a
self-deprecating sense of humor.” It is
devoutly hoped the cheese does not
smell.
Big to-do on Hollywood Boulevard
for the preem of Columbia’s “Spice
World.” Tourists, natives and lotsa celebs
jammed up to see the arrival of the five
Brit pop stars who decided to make a
movie. I’m told (by the press kit) it’s
“bold, and boisterous, with dazzling
explosions of music, hip, style, sex and
kitsch.” So ... if that’s your “cuppa,” go
see. Pas moi.
Two new bios on the stalls. George
Plimpton’s take on the life of Truman
Capote, and “Cagney” by John McCabe.
Reams have been written about Capote,
but very little about Cagney. The reason
being in all his years as a BIG, BIG star,
there was never a whisper about his pri
vate life, or a slur on his character. As
colorful as he was on screen, that’s how
uncolorful he was off. In real life, he was
a very private man, a poet, a painter, and
an environmentalist His early marriage
to his vaudeville partner was a long,
loyal and a happy one. Which indeed
makes for a wonderful life, but a very
unexciting read.

Jane, who sets her cap to win the
affections of handsome Wild Bill
Hickok. The tuneful score includes
the Oscar-winning “Secret Love,”
which became one of Day’s signature
songs. Howard Keel, Philip Carey

DAWSON’S CREEK
In “Blown Away,” Dawson (James
Van Der Beek) angrily confronts his
mother (Mary-Margaret Humes)
about her affair. Mitch (John Wesley
Shipp) is shattered when Gail con
fesses her fling to him. Pacey and
Tamara (Joshua Jackson, Leann

check when a storm strands them
with Pacey’s older brother (guest star

Robert Redford
Happily, more and more important
roles for women, both behind and in
front of the camera, looming on the *9B
horizon. Nicole Kidman and Sandra
Bullock set to team as sisters who use
magic to find true love in “Practical
Magic.” Two terrific talents, but I can’t
picture them as siblings. Not an ounce of
resemblance anywhere.
BITS *N’ PIECES: Aside to Beatrice
F. of Macon, Ga.: Don’t feel too bad.
Not too many people were aware (until
the Golden Globes) that Angelina Jolie
is Jon Voight’s daughter. However, I did
mention it many columns ago ... Little
rivalry between the two hottest
Leonardo DiCaprio and Matt
Damon????? Could be! ... Count on
Greg Kinnear to always be the best sup
porting actor in a pic. He’s been added to
the cast of “You Have Mail,” the remake
of “Little Shop Around The Comer”
realizes that wealthy and ultrasophis- -
ticated Bev has no idea how the other
half lives. Casey Sander and Sam
Horrigan also star.

NYPD BLUE
In “Weaver of Hate,” Simone and
Sipowicz (Jimmy Smits, Dennis
Franz) try to find the killer of a white
teen-ager who was pushed from a
rooftop. Lt. Fancy (James McDaniel)
finds the racial slurs of the dead boy’s
father very offensive. Simone worries
when Russell (Kim Delaney) goes
home ill. Gordon Clapp also co-stars.
TRIVIA

Thomas Jefferson
drew plans for a
"maccaroni
machine" and left
instructions for mak
ing pasta.
starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan ...
Can you believe, or do you care? At 71,
Playboy tycoon Hugh Hefner and his
wife Kimberly have separated. I remem
ber when they couldn’t take their hands
off each other. Mrs. H. and the kids will
live on property adjoining the Playboy
mansion, and you haven’t lived till
you’ve seen that mansion. I got lost once
at a party just taking a walk to see the
grounds ... The Big Easy will never be
the same after that recent NAIPE con
vention what with all those stars making
the restaurant and French Quarter
scenes. Natives slightly hysterical bump
ing into Streisand on Royal St antique
shopping, and Roseanne making the
restaurant rounds ... Can’t tel! you how
pleased I am for Peter Fbnda! He’s long
lived in the shadow of his father and
Jane, and now after many years in those
shadows, he’s emerged as one of the
best Thanks to “Ulee’s Gold” ... Aside
to Lillian M. of Salem, Ore.: Truly I do
not know too much about Burt Reynolds
and Elizabeth Taylor. But whatsoever,
don’t bet on them as a permanent item...
A mustachioed, bearded Denzel
Washington with wife Paulette at the
preem screening of his “Fallen.” Denzel
adds dignity wherever he goes ... To
Martha G. of Del Rio, Texas: As far as I
know, your chances with Leo DiCaprio
are as good as anyone’s. He’s too busy
playing the field and accepting kudos to
concentrate on a significant other. I
THINK ... And to Benita B. of
Escondido, Calif.: I know Julia Roberts
was escorted to a party by Rupert
Everett, but definitely there’s nothing but
friendship between them. Rupert is
openly and admittedly gay.
