Farm assistance

program available
EQIP is a voluntary USDA
conservation program for
farmers and landowners who
face serious threats to soil,
water and related natural
resources. EQIP offers farmers
five to 10 year contracts that
can provide incentive pay
ments and cost-sharing of up
to 75 percent to address multi
ple resource concerns on their
farms. It provides technical,
financial and educational
assistance primarily in desig
nated priority arenas. In gen
eral, priority areas are defined
as watersheds of special envi
ronmental sensitively having
significant soil, watch or relat
ed natural resource concerns.
For 1998 through 2002 the
Lake Lanier Watershed has
been designated a priority
area. A farm that is in the
Lake Lanier Watershed will
compete for funds with other
producers just in this water
shed. Any farm outside the
Lake Lanier Watershed will
compete for funds statewide.
A public meeting will be
held at the White County
Elementary School lunchroom
on Tuesday, Feb. 17, with a
meal starting at 6:30 p.m. for
farmers in the Lake Lanier
Watershed priority area. At
this meeting the EQIP pro
gram will be explained and
farmers will be able to signup

Q: I’ve noticed my favorite
restaurant is advertising some of
its menu items as “Heart
Healthy.” What does this term
mean?
A: Under Food and Drug
Administration regulations a
restaurant may promote their
healthier menu items using claims
about the relationship between a
nutrient or food and a disease or
health conditions. For example, a
dish that is low in fat, saturated fat
and cholesterol may reduce the
risk of heart disease. These claims
are known as health claims, and
they usually appear on menus in
simple terms, such as “heart
healthy.” More information about
explaining this term should be
available on the menu or in other
labeling, and the accompanying
nutrition information must be pro-

Q: I think a bee colony is nest
ing inside the wall in the guest
bedroom. What should I do?
A: In some cases, bees and peo
ple have lived together with no
problem for years. If the nest entry
site is located in remote areas such
as the peak of the roof, you could
leave the nest intact. However, if
the idea of bees nesting in the
walls of your home makes you
uncomfortable, seek professional
assistance. Contact a pest control
company and a beekeeper.
Q: Do I need a permit to make
wine for my own personal use?
A: Under federal law, the head of
a family is allowed to produce for
home consumption only up to 200
gallons of wine annually without
payment of tax. However, before
making wine, you must file dupli
cate copies of form 1541 with the
Internal Revenue Service. The

Q: I would like to treat my den
for fleas with a room fogger.
How can I determine if the room
is too large for the fogging prod
uct I purchased?
A: To determine the volume of a
space such as a room, measure
and multiply the room’s length,
width, and height. For example, a
space 10 feet long, 8 feet wide,
and 8 feet high contains a volume
of 640 cubic feet.
Q: What is rescue grass?
A: Rescuegrass is a short-lived
bunch grass closely related to
bromegrass and cheat or chess. It
is productive in later winter and
spring. It is a prolific seeder and
should not be planted on areas
where crops are harvested for seed
in spring. Rescuegrass requires
high fertility and is not recom
mended for use in Georgia. If you
are looking for good perennial
cool season grass for your pasture,
contact your local county exten- ’
sion service.
Q: My store had cheddar
cheese on sale so I bought 20 one
pound packages. Can I freeze
it?
A: Cheese can be stored in the
refrigerator for three to six
months. But, if the freezer is better
suited to your needs, hard and
semi-hard block cheese can be
frozen. If the cheese is packaged
in unopened moisture-vapor resis
tant material, place it directly into
the freezer. Although the cheese
may become crumbly and mealy
when frozen, it will retain its fla
vor. Cream cheese and cottage
cheese do not freeze well.
