U.S. Fish and Wildlife: Fairy shrimp not warranted for listing
A petition to add the Stone
Mountain fairy shrimp to the
Federal list of threatened and
endangered species is not war
ranted, the U.S. Fish and
Wildlife Service announced
today. The Service’s Southeast
Regional Director, Sam
Hamilton, said the decision
reflects a 12-month study that
documented changes to habitat
from recreational and construc
tion activities, but could not
determine that these modifica
tions pose a threat to the shrimp.
The fairy shrimp, a relative of

You Give Me A Pain In The Neck!
Can anyone give us a pain in the neck? Well, we can allow another person to contribute to
our discomfort by emotionally interacting with them.
In animals, we are able to recognize the emotions of fear and anger when we see them
bare their teeth and their fur stands on end because their neck and back muscles are contract- Mm|M
ed -
As humans, we tend to react similarly. More than just a few people grind their teeth at night kgl/ Q.
as a result of suppressed emotions. To grind the teeth, the neck muscles must contract. | . M Z
Prolonged contractions combined with an abnormal sleeping posture (perhaps due to too thick
a pillow or just sleeping with the head and neck in a kinked position) can alter the structural |
alignment of the spine,. This causes the neck muscles to go into severe spasms in their attempts ||»H
to puH the head and neck back into balance.
More often, neck pain is induced when the head and neck are whiplashed in sports, falls or V
automobile accidents. But even then, pre-existing stresses reduce the flexibility of the neck
muscles which, in turn, makes the Individual more susceptible to neck injuries. Dr. Mike Purpura, B.S. D.C.
There is a saying, "sticks and stones can break our bones, but names can never hurt us." Board Certified
Added to that should be "unless we allow them to hurt us"l
So if we allow someone to get under our skin, especially in the neck area, it may be true that “they give us a pain in the neck".
Therefore, it is logical that neck pain is due largely to structural imbalances brought on by either physical and/or emotional
causes. Pills, potions and lotions may propride a degree of temporary relief, but the treatment of choice should be the gentle
realigning and balancing of the head and nock (cervical spine).
So whether you acquired your neck pain accidentaly or by allowing someone to “give you a pain the neck," for fast, fast relief,

to test the water that is piped
from the plant underneath his
backyard and then discharged
into Lake Lanier at some
unknown point beyond his dock.
He put the water in a bottle and
took it to AMPRO Laboratories
whose test revealed a sample
fecal count of 6 million colonies
per 100 rnL. The EPD’s limit is
200 colonies per 100 mL. The
EPD responded and took its own
sample March 2 which showed
fecal amounts 65 times greater
than the limit.
While the EPD is studying the
matter, no decision on mandated
repairs had been made as of press
said. “I know of no other Senator
who has the interest and desire to
add more equity to the QBE for
mula than Sen. Middleton. I look
forward to reading his commit
tee’s recommendations this win
ter.”
Middleton first co-chaired the
committee in 1996 with State
Rep. John Godby. Upon Godby’s
retirement in 1996, Middleton
found in the past on the summit
of Stone Mountain, a large gran
ite outcrop in the state park in
DeKalb County near Atlanta.
The last documented collection
of fairy shrimp was in 1951.
Extensive surveys were conduct
ed in 1997 and failed to locate
the species on Stone Mountain,
which could mean it is extinct.
The fairy shrimp survives dry
periods on Stone Mountain as a
dormant, encapsulated embryo in
temporary pools found in shal
low rock depressions that peri
odically fill with rainwater. The
pools also support other plants
time on Friday evening.
Coenen has argued that the
Planning Commission’s decision
to recommend approval of the
project pending EPD action has
him outraged. “Obviously, some
planning commissioners are noth
ing but tools for the developers,
the politics and the money who
got the current Board of
Commissioners elected ...” At the
May 27 hearing, he said that the
development should be denied

Lt. Governor and his confidence
in my work with the committee,”
Middleton said. “I look forward to

The parkland that contains the
shrimp’s vernal pool has already

no benefits to the homes in the

Hamilton said the FWSreview
