RASPUTIN: MYSTICAL, POW
ERFUL, INSATIABLE
Rasputin was bom a Siberian peas
ant in the mid 1800 s. June’s Biography
magazine tells of his early psychic gifts
once he correctly identified a village
horse thief through intuition alone
and legendary sexual appetite.
Although he married at 20, he contin

declared, “He has enough for all.”
Then he discovered religion. After a
monastic initiation, he embarked on
foot on a series of pilgrimages through

ing followers and healing the sick. But
he was no ordinary holy man. Unlike
other pious devotees, Rasputin con
stantly gave in to temptation. Sex,
drink and carousing were part of his
undisciplined life.
Yet he was introduced to Czar
Nicholas II and his wife, Alexandra.
The bond became unbreakable when,
with a single touch to the forehead, he
eased the pain of their hemophiliac
son, Alexis. Over the next few years,
Rasputin continued to soothe Alexis.
Alexandra became convinced he was
sent to her by God.
When Russia entered WWI,
Nicholas went to the front to lead the
troops. He left Alexandra in charge.
She looked to her “Man of God” for
guidance. Rasputin’s power went to his
head. He appointed incompetent syco
phants and, as a result, food shortages
intensified, rifles didn’t get manufac
tured and railroads didn’t run.
To preserve the czarist regime, some
nobles banded together to kill
Rasputin. He was lured to a palace
party and shot in the basement. The
conspirators bundled him into a car and
dropped him through a hole into the
frozen river. The cold revived him but
he couldn’t punch his way through the
ice and drowned. Ten weeks later, the
czar abdicated. The next year, Lenin
and the Bolsheviks seized power and
the royal family was murdered. , - -
