Memoir finds hope,
tragedy in Robert F.
Kennedy's life

June 4, 1968, the day Sen. Robert F.
Kennedy was fatally shot, was both a
tragic and a transforming one in a chaot
ic, restless year. Robert F. Kennedy - A
Memoir, airing Sunday, June 7, on the
Discovery Channel, pauses to look back
on Kennedy's life 30 years after his
death.
Kennedy, who had just become the
front-runner for the Democratic nomi
nation for president, was perceived by
some to be riding on the coattails of his
late brother John, the president But, as
Memoir shows, the Kennedys had dif
ferent constituencies.
“When John Kennedy died,” remarks
high-school English instructor Robert
Harter, “the teachers cried. When
Robert Kennedy died, the students
cried.” . '
Based on journalist Jack Newfield’s
book about the character and career of
the third son of Joseph and Rose
Kennedy, Memoir offers little about his
childhood, education or marriage, con
centrating instead on his role in the fam
ily political dynasty. The film captures
the awakening of a champion of the
people who infected his children with a
sense of idealism and charity.

job of appreciating and evaluating is
done by others.
Nevertheless, for those old enough to
remember the 1950 s and particularly the
