MOVIE: THE JERK
Steve Martin's unique brand of
humor is at its most absurdly endear
ing in this 1979 comedy. He plays
Navin, a naive bumpkin adopted by a
black Mississippi family. His rela
tives love him but hold no illusions
about his abilities. They worry when
he heads out into the world accompa
nied by a dog with an unprintable
name to find fame and fortune.

has made an excellent movie of ‘The
Horse Whisperer.” For those who have
not read the book For those who have, i
myself included, one must certainly I
wonder why he changed the ending, or
rather that he left one hanging at the
end. Certainly the way the book ends is
far more exciting, but quite sad. So
maybe that’s why. We don’t want sad
endings to movies. Do we?... The entire
cast, Redford, Kristin Scott Thomas,
Scarlett Johansson, Sam Neill, Diane
Wiest and Charles Cooper are excellent;
the scenery is gorgeous and there are a
lot of horses, so the two hours and 44
minutes do not pall.
I have never understood how anyone
:ould air private matters to the world,
'tow, it’s Lorna Lust in her book “Me
md My Shadows,” who bares it all
ibout her mother, Judy Garland. But she
loesn’t stop there. She also tells it al
ibout sister Liza, brother Joey, Dad Sid
Lust, all his wives, Liza’s husbands, and
many others. After she bares their dark
est traits, she always says how much she
loves them. Ho boy, with love like that,
Ivho needs hate? One wonders is it
money, catharsis, self-aggrandizement,
■ place in the spotlight??? What is it that
makes the children of the likes of Bette
Rlavis Joan Crawford and other greats
Bel they must tell it to the public
WARTS and all?
■ There's going to be a hot time in
Blabama when Antonio Banderas,
Bfelanie Griffith, Rod Steiger, Elizabeth

murderous drifters into their homes
under the mistaken impression that
the stranger is a long-lost relative? Or

day? Viewers can ponder these ques
tions during this poignant drama that
follows a gifted district attorney
(Hamel) who makes one wretched
decision after another.

In the special 90-minute conclu
sion of “Lost Israel,” the detectives
continue their investigation of a
child's murder. Simone (Jimmy
Smits) tries to earn the trust of the
boy’s father. Sipowicz (Dennis Franz)

given to him as clues by a homeless
mute. Russell (Kim Delaney) forms a
bond with the boy’s mother, who may
hold the key to the case.

actually be her long-lost brother in Stranger in My Home, airing Tuesday
on CBS.

duces four short films by rising
female directors in the Women’s Film
Festival. The two-hour event pre
mieres Tuesday, June 9, on Lifetime.
Marshall also talks with the four
directors about their aspirations and
influences. This year’s movies
include Rituals, by director Carol
Mayes; director Dani Minnick’s
World Upon Her Shoulders;
Icebergs, directed by Nicola Hart;
and director Paula Walker’s Seed.
Stars featured in the films include
Joely Fisher and Barbara Bain.

PROTECTING YOUR PICTURES: If you’ve gotten vacation photographs back
from the developer with mysterious streaks or blurred images, your film may have
been scanned by the latest “bomb-sniffing” equipment that is gradually being
installed at major airports across the country, says John Sun, director of the Good
Housekeeping Institute’s Engineering Department The technologically advanced
scanning system is used only for checked baggage, so you can avoid ruined photos
by carrying your film and loaded cameras on board with you; in the United States,
the machines used to check cany-on baggage will not harm film.
QUICK FIX FOR A CURLED CORNER; A reader writes: ‘The vinyl flooring
in my kitchen is curling up from the floor at a seam. It’s shabby looking and dan
gerous we keep tripping on it Is there a simple fix?” v
The answer from the experts at the Good Housekeeping Institute: Use your blow
dryer to warm and soften curled-up flooring near the seam (be sure to wave the
fathjp you don’t overheat one particular spot). Then, peel back the
flooring slightly and brush or vacuum out any dirt that’s underneath.
Next, apply vinyl-flooring cement (sold in hardware or flooring stores) to the
