‘Birdsong’ - Novel
Birdsong by Sebastian
Faulks was reviewed by Ruth
Xekfeu.
Birdsong is one of the most
iftlense novels you’ll find in
bookstores this summer. It s
called “a novel of love and
war," and as you read it, you’ll
feel both the physical and emo
tional intensity of a love affair
before and during the First
World War.
In 1910, Stephen Wraysford is
a young businessman from
England on assignment at a
cloth factory in Amiens,
France. He and Isabelle Azaire,
the wife of his host, fall in love.
The sensuality of their affair is
heightened by the danger that
her husband will find out, but
ultimately they cannot stay
apart and they elope, abandon-

The prospective bridegroom is
the grandson ofJames F. Stout
of Muncy, Pa., Naomi R. Stout
of Cumming and the late Mr.
and Mrs. Andy Zosh.
The bride-elect attended

and Science with a bachelor of

Gallery.

Linder, Cynthia McKinney, Jack
Kingston, Bob Barr, Mac Collins,
John Lewis and Newt Gingrich,
several issues were brought to
their personal attention which
affect all Georgians.
Some of the important issues
and talking points requested of
the Georgia elected officials is to
help increase the amount of
money invested in cancer
research for the National Cancer
Institute and to support early
detection and treatment efforts
particularly to the underserved
Georgia population. Another
issue discussed which is very
important to all Georgians is the
need for tobacco control and pre
vention activities.
The Buntins had the opportunity
for the discussion from Sen. John
McCain and other senior staff
from the Congressional commit
tees and the White House to
ing her husband, stepchildren
and comfortable life to live
together in a cottage. Stephen
works as a cabinetmaker to sup
port them.
Sebastian Faulks’ novel is
divided into sections that move
through the years 1910, 1916,
1918 and 1978. In 1978, a
young woman in England dis
covers several diaries that
Stephen Wraysford kept of
those early years, and her story
acts as a counterpoint to earlier
events.
By 1916, Stephen has returned
to England and been sent to
Belgium at the beginning of the
World War. He is an infantry
officer working closely with a
unit of miners who are tunnel
ing beneath the German lines so
that they can plant explosives.

Another highlight of their
Capitol Hill advocacy visit was to
of love and war is intense for summer
Faulks’ descriptions of the
love scenes between Isabelle
and Stephen are meltingly
romantic and sensual, but his
narrative of the men at the front
lines show the numbness, pain
and fatigue of those who served
in the War To End All Wars.
There is no glamour or political
statement here. The men,
plunked down in the midst of a
muddy, rat-infested trench in
Belgium, have only the vaguest
idea of why they are fighting.
All the brutality of 20th century
technology, including mustard
gas and relentless artillery, is
focused on them.
The scene most heart-breaking
to me occurred after weeks of
rain have turned the trenches
into cesspools. The men art
pinned down by the consign!

Artillery will weaken the
German positions, they say, and
all the infantry needs to do is

In reality, the men are advanc

don’t die are horribly wounded
or gassed. The carnage is so
great that the chaplain himself
curses God and the generals.

with him when the final, disas
trous cave-in occurs. In spite of
all the horror, they hold on to

survive until help comes.
The title of the novel,
Birdsong, is appropriate
because birds represent a vari
ety of things. To Stephen, birds
mean death and he is repelled
by them. To the miners,
canaries are there to warn them
of danger. And at the end,
when the war is over, the only
sound heard on the battlefield
is a lark singing.
