reinforce the lesson while they
“play” with the CD.
“It’s a video game format,” said
Sarah Bellamy, Title I teacher at
Chestatee. For instance, said
Bellamy, when the children are
learning their multiplication
tables at school, they can go home
to the Sony Playstation and play a

Bellamy described one game
involving sea creatures and math.
“In the middle of a screen floats
the equation two times three,” she
said. “The child has to find the
number six at the bottom of the
screen, which is mixed in with
other sea creatures,” and all the
while, she said, “not get eaten by
the ‘bad’ sea creature.”
Bellamy said some of the games
are not typical games at all, but
enjoyable lessons in language
arts, including reading activities
from “Highlights” magazine.
The first sets of equipment were
assigned to students in May. An
additional Title I grant allowed
nine more to be distributed
Tuesday, June 2. The children
have been given permission to
keep the tools over the summer
months so they can keep their
skills sharp.
“Lightspan allows us to achieve
a unique connection between
schools and homes that will sig
nificantly increase student
achievement,” said Chestatee
Principal Ann Sefzick. “Bringing
these powerful and innovative
educational tools into the stu
dent’s home has the potential to
impact education positively in
several ways: by increasing the
time spent each day on learning,
by increasing family involvement
and by providing greater access
to technology for students.”
Sunday, June 7. All area teachers
are invited to attend the service, to
be held at South Forsyth High
School in the auditorium. For
more information, call (770) 888-
