world and didn’t have the desire to leave.”
• Also, said Fuller, not many high schoolers went on to
college at that time, partly due to the agricultural way of
life, and partly because “unemployment was unheard
of.”
1 Fuller added that many of the young men jumped at
th© chance to work for corporations such as Lockheed
Martin and General Motors,
even if it meant driving 50 or
60 miles each way. The only
problem with finding a job in
those days, said Fuller, was the
chance someone wouldn’t hire
yOu if you were eligible for the
draft - people were afraid they
niight train someone just in
titne to lose him.
“It was really wild to grow
up as a teen in Forsyth County
at that time,” said Fuller. “We
weren’t allowed to have
dances, and the only thing you
could buy on Sunday was ice.
We had the old Frances Theatre
where the County Administrative building now stands,
but it was open Monday through Saturday only. But
Cumming was a wonderful little place in those days.

Everybody knew everybody.”
Due to staunch religious beliefs, said Blackbum,
adults were not pleased when rock and roll hit
Cumming.
“Elvis, the Everly Brothers, Pat Boone - we were
crazy about that stuff,” said Blackbum. “We all became
instant music critics.”
“The first year [the school was open], Coach
Henderson wanted to hold a football banquet,” reported
Fuller, “and there was an announcement in the newspa
per about a dance. Well, the phones began ringing with
‘No dancing’ calls.”
Many of the classmen from this era have since grown
into the role of public ser
vant.
Several current and for
mer county politicians, busi
ness leaders, teachers and
even principals were in
attendance at FCHS during
its first year. Mayor Ford
Gravitt, former sheriff
Donald Pirkle, decorated
war veteran Johnny Pirkle, former representative Bill
Barnett, former county commissioners Levi Hubbard,
Harrison Tallant and Donald Glover, city councilmen
Lewis Ledbetter and Rupert Sexton, probate judge Joyce
Wallace Hawkins, Tax Commissioner Bobby Gene
Gilbert, Chestatee Elementary School Principal Ann
Sefzik and FCHS technology teacher Ralph Martin are a
handful of community leaders who spent their formative
years in Forsyth County.
“Things were a lot different then,” said
city councilman Rupert Sexton. “We didn’t
have anything to do here, and school activi
ties were very disciplined.” Sexton said he
believes this discipline is more rare among
today’s high schoolers.
“Students had much greater respect for the
teachers then than you find now,” he said.
“The morals were much better then.”

reunion. Lambert later went on to work for the state
Department of Education, and was present for the retire
ment reception held last week in honor of assistant
superintendent Betty Benson.
The FCHS graduates were saddened however, at the
recent passing of Almon Hill, revered principal, teacher
and basketball coach who served Forsyth County
Schools for more than 30 years.
“He was a gentleman’s gentleman,” said Sexton.
Since many of the students who attended FCHS in
1956 never left Cumming, or came back following a few
years of college or some time in the military service, the
group has been lucky enough to develop lifelong friend
ships and establish relationships with the families
of their peers as their own families grew.
