I FORSYTH COUNTY NEWS —Wtdnwtey, Jun* 10,
Upon Further Review...
1000th win is no big deal to
Braves’ image-changer Cox
For years, whenever I thought of
the the Atlanta Braves baseball
team, my mind flashed to one sin
gle, vibrant, indelible image.
Leap back to the summer of
1982. The Braves had shocked the
baseball world - and themselves -
by winning their first 13 games.
They quickly reverted to form,
losing their next five - because
these were the Braves, after all.
And once upon a time, they were
more hopeless than the Falcons.
In non-strike seasons from 1970
through 1981, the Braves finished
within 22 games of first place only
three times.
They soared into third place
three times. Ditto fourth place.
From ’76-’79, the finished dead
last. Every year.
This ineptitude produced a caval
cade of managers. Remember
Lum Harris, Eddie Mathews and
Clyde King? How about Connie
Ryan, Dave Bristol, Vem Benson
and Bobby Cox - on his original
knees.
Why, things were so forlorn that
Ted Turner himself took the con
trols for a game. Commissioner
Bowie Kuhn quickly nixed
Turner’s dugout career; it was
Kuhn’s only move as commission
er that was universally applauded.
Against this laughingstock back
ground, the ’B2 Braves lurched
ahead. Spring became summer,
and, miraculously, the Braves held
first place.
Somehow, it seemed that new
manager Joe Torre had magically
erased the previous decade from
the Braves’ minds. These guys

LAKE LANIER FISHING
REPORT FOR JUNE 10,1998
Lake Sidney Lanier is one foot
over full, the water temperature is
81 degrees and the lake is clear.
The best day will be Sunday, from
6 a.m. until 9:30 a.m.
BLACK BASS are on the banks
up and down lake, but they have
been slow to bite. The best fishing
has been in the rivers and up-lake
creeks from Gainesville to Lula
on the Chattachoochee River side.
Small Deep Wee R’s in baby
bass, shad Zoom Flukes on a 1/4-
ounce lead head, spinner baits and
trick worms are the better baits.
Work the docks in the pockets just
off the main river and skip a June
bug trick worm under the docks.
An all-white spinner bait with
small, double willow leaf blades
will look like the shad the bass are
feeding on.
The passing full moon Tuesday
night (June 9), will usually slow
down the bass for three days.
Watch the moon tables and fish as
close to the major feeding periods
as possible.
Lighted docks at night are few

actually took the field thinking
they were going to win. This was
too good to be true.
And then it happened. In August,
the Braves finally crashed - and
crashed hard. In an epic struggle,
they lost 19 of 21 games. They
were finally caught by the stalking
Dodgers.
By lucky scheduling, the Braves
visited Dodger Stadium near the
streak’s end. And seemingly had
the Dodgers beaten in the series
opener.
Up a run in the bottom of the
ninth, with two on and two out,
Gene Garber induced a ground
ball to Jerry Royster at second.
Royster was on one knee and
still the ball managed to scoot
under his glove. As the Dodgers
poured out of the dugout to cele
brate, Royster knelt in the infield,
banging his glove on the dirt.
It was the signature moment of
the bad old days of the bad old
Braves. Royster’s childish reaction
epitomized Braves baseball. They
were all little leaguers.
And though the ’B2 Braves did
win the division, they were swept
by St. Louis in the playoffs. They
stayed in contention for two more
years, and faded back into obliv
ion.
Until finally the Braves found a
Moses to lead them into baseball’s
promised land.

and far between on the lake, but
they are still worth fishing around.
A red shad Culprit worm on a
Texas rig is a good bait all sum
mer. Add the small Zoom cotton
candy mini lizards on a light wire
hook, or an all-black trick worm
to the night tackle.
The all-black buzz bait from
Lunker Lure is a fun way to get
the fish to chase a bait. If the bass
misses it, go right back in the
same location and stop the bait for
one second and it will grab it.
During the day, use the green or
white Zoom trick worm and let
the bait sink just out of sight into
any deep wood in the water. After
mid-day, go up the rivers to the
cooler water.
Use The No. 7 Shad Rap and an
all-white Zoom Super Fluke on a
4/0 Owner hook. Cast into the
wood right off the river or a deep
dock with heavy brush.
SPOTTED BASS are fair and
the fish are on points in the brush
piles and around all the lake’s
deeper docks. These fish have
moved into the deeper water as
summer set in on the lake.

After his successful stint as gen
eral manager, he stepped back
onto the field to manage the talent
he had cultivated.
Last Saturday, he won his
I,oooth game as Braves manager.
Only 16 other managers in base
ball history have reached that fig
ure with one team.
Typically, Bobby Cox down
played the historic occasion.
“It’s not something I had thought
about coming in today. I had really
forgotten about it until Glavine
told me.”
And also, this: “It means you’ve
had pretty good players.”
That’s Cox. Humble and profes
sional. He does his job every day,
and does it well. It’s no coinci
dence that the Braves carry them
selves the same way. Don’t ever
think a team doesn’t take on its
manager’s attributes.
But all success aside, Bobby Cox
did something even more mean
ingful. He created a new image of
the Braves. And that was no small
task.

also shone in the 200 (county run
ner-up) and other events.
The Raider junior also anchored
a super 4 x 400 relay. Again, a
North quartet scored at state, this
time with a blazing 3:31.16. The
group included Cory Viehl, Tim
Caliento, Rains and Snook. It
took an incredible anchor by
Snook for the team to get second
at region to make state.
Caliento, by the way, was
extremely versatile. Taking up the
shot put late in the year, he
stunned with a 43’11” throw at
region for sixth. The junior was
second or third in events as
diverse as the high jump, 100 and
300 hurdles at county, before join
ing Snook in a late season foray
into the throws.
When Snook wasn’t battling
Class A opponents, he had a great
rival in South’s Ryan Holverson.
The junior was runner-up in the
county 1-lapper, but claimed the
crown at the 200 (23.31).
Then Holverson zipped to the 7-
AA title in the 400 to make state
again, with his personal best of
51.70 coming in the region semi.
The other region title from
Forsyth came via the impressive
leaps by Central’s Jeremy Boles.
The junior claimed the 7-AA long
jump at 20’10-3/4” and went on
to take 11th at state - all despite
very little training due to partici
pation on the Diamond Dogs.
‘ His teammate, Brandon
Westbrook, was the other county '
double winner. He was the champ
there in both the shot put and dis
cus (PB of 132’3” earlier in sea

however, for second in the region
disc by South’s Jeremy Keever
and was fourth in the shot (PB

Indeed, Keever came up with a
dramatic throw of 131’1” on his
last attempt to attain his goal of
making state and finally beating
Westbrook. He was 12th there,
and also did well all season in the
shot.
South’s fifth state qualifier was
Jerimiah Thompson. In his first
season of high-jumping, the
senior made natural ability and
determination go a long way as he
won county and finished second
at region at 6’4”.
Making state for the second time
in the triple jump, but unfortu
nately not able to participate, was
Central’s Shugart. He suffered
the aforementioned injury on his
fifth leap at region, a 41’7-1/2”
bound that put him temporarily
into first. Soccer was the senior’s
main gig, but he still second in the
county in both jumps.
Chris Price played soccer for
the Dogs, too, but still found time
to get runner-up at region in the
800 (2:04.18) to make state again.
The junior was also fourth in the
1600, not to mention seconds in
each at county.
South’s other big contributors
included Brian Brannon, Brad
Thomas, Chris Deal and Dino
Tzortzis.
Brannon was the county long
jump champ (19’7”, plus fifth at
region) and also an important
sprinter and relay team member.
Thomas also did the 4 x 400, but
he biggest claim to fame was his
stretch-run victory in the county
800 (2:12.13, plus fifth in region).
Deal just missed making state in
the 3200, taking third in the 7-AA
meet with a 10:43.43. He was also
second at county. Tzortzis gave
Keever lots of support with his
county third and region fifth in the
these summer fish. Depths should
be around 25 to 30 feet and it will
take a Lowrance depth finder to
see these humps and the schools
of bait fish.
The jumbo shiners are the best
baits for the summer stripers. Use
a long leader, and a small Kahle
hook, and place the bait straight
down on the main lake humps and
points. Keep the line sizes to
about 12 pound test.
Stripers are very sensitive to the
heavier lines in the lakes clear

The bridges up and down lake
will be producing better late week

will bring the bait fish in and this
will get the crappie biting. Depths
may vary from 6 feet to 15 feet.

Central’s other team members
included Matt Mulkey and Brett
Wilkie. Mulkey was the county
100 champ (11.61), then took
third at region. He also was top
Dog in the 200 and a key relay
anchor.
Wilkie reached 6’ in the high
jump at region, placing sixth after
getting second at county.
North’s other honorees were
Danny Williams and Ryan Klee.
Though Williams was just third in
the county in the tough 110 hur
dles, he was good enough to be
fourth in the 8-A meet (16.48),
just missing state. Klee took third
in the county 3200 and then sixth
in the region in the same..
Honorable mentions include
Adam Johnson and Keith Boling
of South; Eli Harris and Johnny
Harrison of North; and Josh
Roper, Payton Haynes and
Castelan of Central.
Johnson, a young up-and-com
ing thrower, was third in the coun
ty shot and just missed scoring at
region in seventh. Boling was
hampered by injury at region, but
took third in the county 100 and
did great relay duty for South
most of the year.
Central’s Haynes was one of the
few brave enough (and able) to try
the pole vault and was fifth in the
region. Roper was fourth in the
county 400, but then a decent fifth
at region. Castelan did a bit of
everything for the Dogs, a high
light being his third in the county
triple jump.
Harris and Harrison was solid
distance contributors for the
Raiders, with the former third in
the county 1600 and the latter
doing the same in the same meet’s
800.
