COMMUNITY LIVING
Increasing your lifespan
Through the miracle of medical
advances and various technologi
cal breakthroughs, Americans are
enjoying life expectancy well into
their 70s. Unfortunately, many of
us are suffering during these
golden years due to diseases such
as heart problems, osteoporosis,
diabetes, and glaucoma. Diseases
such as these, which affect the
quality of our lives, may be less
ened in severity and possibly
even prevented by establishing
healthy lifestyles during our
youth.
Though aging is inevitable, it
appears that the aging process
itself may be slowed and even
reversed through exercise and
diet. Studies have indicated that
regular, vigorous exercise may be
one of the most potent adjuncts in
the anti-aging battle. Even exer
cising moderately, such as walk
ing briskly each day for 30 min
utes, may add years to our lives
and improve the quality of those
bonus years. By decreasing the
incidence of ailments such as car
diovascular disease, some can
cers, arthritis, osteoporosis, and
diabetes, exercise can be potent
ftnedicine.
Recent research involving
16,000 adult twins for 19 years
(pynd that those who exercised
occasionally were 30 percent less
likely to die prematurely than
‘their sedentary twins. Even more
.impressive, according to the
vigorous exercisers were 56
less likely to die. Another
stfldy at Harvard, involving
17,000 alumni, came to the same
ddhclusion. Apparently, the men
who expended 500-1,000 calories
weekly through exercise reduced
their risk of death by 22 percent,
While those who burned 2,500
calories each week (the equivalent
of walking 25 miles) increased
their lifespan by as many as two
years
■' Along with exercise, diet is cru
cial to the anti-aging equation.
Decline in cancer cases due to lifestyle changes
' There’s some reassuring news
*about cancer in America. A

Jthe National Cancer Institute
j shows that the incidence of can
peer among Americans is declin-
IBfor the first time in fifty
rs —a decline that is partly
buted to healthier lifestyles,
tluding changes in diet and
leased exercise. Although the
op in incidence has been

Ae the message that cancer

*st fall, the American Institute
f Cancer Research (AICR)
t published a landmark report on
; diet and cancer, “Food, Nutrition
, and the Prevention of Cancer: A

estimates that, through a proper
)' diet, weight control and exercise,
I we can reduce the incidence of
1 cancer by 30 to 40 percent. So

The problem is, Americans are
fatter than ever, with obesity on
the rise, contributing significantly
to various maladies. By making
educated choices while planning
our meals, many of the diet-relat
ed diseases that adversely affect
us as we age may be eliminated.
For example, by simply limiting
daily fat intake to less than 30
percent of the total calories con
sumed, and keeping cholesterol
below 220 milligrams, the risk of
heart disease may be decreased
dramatically. Similarly, the risk of
developing certain types of cancer
may be decreased by consuming
the recommended five servings
daily of fruit and vegetables.
According to a recent study,
where 10 servings of fruit and
vegetables and three servings of
low-fat dairy products were con
sumed, referred to as the DASH
diet (Dietary Approaches to Stop
Hypertension), blood pressure
was normalized without medica
tion.
Eating plenty of fruits and veg
etables is an excellent means of
getting the antioxidants that your
body needs to stave off aging as
well. Antioxidants, such as vita
min C, E, and carotenes, protect
the cells against highly reactive
molecules called free radicals.
These free radicals, which are
formed when converting oxygen
and food into energy, may damage
cells and DNA. Apparently, free
radical damage may be a main
contributor to age-related dis
eases, such as cancer, heart dis
ease, and to the aging process
itself. By consuming the sug
gested five serving of fruits and
vegetables daily, which are
packed with antioxidants, our
cells may be protected against
the deleterious effects of free
radicals.
Diet and longevity were the
focus of yet another study at the
National Institute on Aging. This
study, which involved mdnkeys,
while the number of cancer cases
has decreased slightly in recent
years, health experts agree that
the potential for cancer preven
tion far exceeds current rates of
decline.
Cancer of the lung, prostate,
breast and colon/rectum are the
four most common types of the
disease, accounting for 54 per
cent of all newly diagnosed can
cers in this country. But the
extent to which these cancers
could be prevented through sim
ple lifestyle changes is encour
aging. The expert panel of scien
tists who produced “Food,
Nutrition and the Prevention of
Cancer: A Global Perspective,”
estimates that diets containing
five daily servings of a variety of
fruits and vegetables could pre
vent more than 20 percent of all
cancers. And keeping alcohol
intake within the recommended
limits of a maximum of one
drink per day for women and
F Cindy
Martino
examined the effect of caloric
restriction on aging. The research
indicated that by restricting
caloric intake, the animals were
less likely to develop diabetes,
were able to decrease their blood
pressure and triglyceride levels,
and increase their “good” choles
terol levels as compared to their
always satiated counterparts.
Additionally, the calorically
restricted monkeys were more
active and alert. These studies,
which reinforced the conclusions
of earlier studies involving calo
rie-restricted rats, may translate
into similar findings in humans.
Living into our 70s, 80s and even
90s does not have to mean an iso
lated existence in a nursing home,
dealing with a host of medical ail
ments. By taking charge of our
health and fitness now, we may
truly find that the “golden years”
can be golden. The following
recipe is an easy, delicious way to
get the antioxidants that you need,
along with a low-fat, tasty source
of calcium.

2 medium, tart apples, grated
1/2 cup finely minced celery

two drinks per day for men could
prevent up to 20 percent of cases
of cancers of the breast, colon
and rectum, and aerodigestive
tract.
Exercise and maintaining a
proper weight also play impor
tant roles in cancer prevention,
especially for colon cancer,
which will be diagnosed in
approximately 95,600 Americans
this year. Researchers estimate
that diets high in vegetables and
low in meat, together with regu
lar physical activity and the
avoidance of alcohol, could
decrease the incidence of col
orectal cancer by 66-75 percent,
making it one of the most pre
ventable of all cancers.
By following AICR’s diet and
health recommendations for can
cer prevention, which include
eating a plant-based diet and get
ting regular exercise, we can
continue to experience falling
cancer rates in coming years.

Rockin ’ retail with Gaither Vocal Band
By Alton Bridge*
Staff Writer
Approximately 700 people gath
ered inside the Wal-Mart
Super Center in Cumming
Tuesday evening to hear the
award-winning Gaither Vocal
Band sing four songs and visit
with them.
The band was almost 30 minutes
late, but that didn’t dampen the
spirits of the group.
“Some of us have been up
since 5 o’clock this morning,”
apologized Gaither. “We
appeared on an early Atlanta
television show and have not
stopped since.”
When the audience began clap
ping and cheering, the band
responded as if this was their
first show of the day.
They sang “My Lord and I,” “In
That Great Getting Up Morning,”
“They Baptized Jesse Taylor” and
“Satisfied.”
After the four songs, the per
formers visited with the crowd
and signed autographs. Even
though the line was long, Gaither
and his band made a special
effort to spend time with each
person, especially with the chil
dren, and sought out the handi
capped people who could not get
into the line.
“The band told us they would
stay as long as the people want
ed us to,” said Bill Cesney, the
manager of the Wal-Mart.
“That’s great. They are not ‘Mr.
or Ms. Important.’ We have had
some performers come to stores
and leave early or who were rude
to the customers.”
“This is the land that Wendy
Bagwell and Junior Samples used
to tell us about,” said Gaither,
“and it is as pretty as they used to
describe it.”
Traveling with the Gaither band
was Judi Turner, who has a public
relations firm in Nashville, but
