major road widening projects, including: McFarland
Road/Hwy. 9 to McGinnis Ferry, McGinnis Ferry,
Bethel view Road, Hwy. 306 from Ga. 400 to Hwy.
369, Hutchinson Road and Old Buford Road.
The board discussed several pavement widening
and shoulder building projects. Commissioner-elect
Michael Bennett suggested that the intersection of
Hwy. 371 at Kelly Mill Road be improved. “There
have been several deaths there,” he said.
It was proposed that Sanders Road be widened
from Hwy. 20 to Buford Dam Road. However,
Commissioner John Kieffer said that the residents
maintenance and establishment of local advisory
committees.
After the 45-day period expires, the facilitator
must publish the results of the negotiation process
and include the date, time and place of a meeting to

Nina Payne Cash, 94, of

don’t favor that idea. “They don’t want Sanders Road
improved,” he said. “It will just increase traffic.”
Commissioners Julian Bowen and Kieffer were in
agreement that bike paths and sidewalks could be a
viable alternative for the Sanders Road area.
Moreland estimated that the state could probably
fund 50 percent of the sidewalks on Sanders Road.
Jenkins said that the commission could apply for
grant money if a plan was is place.
Commissioner Andy Anderson mentioned that
another possibility for road widening was Vann’s
Tavern Road.
Moreland suggested that the commission find out
what the people felt about the issue and then come
back to his firm.

GSP: 18 holiday traffic deaths

Local and state law enforcement agencies did not
get a break over Thanksgiving, but the number of
holiday accidents was lower than expected.
The Georgia State Patrol handled 18 traffic fatali
ties and 2,846 accidents from 6 p.m. Wednesday until
midnight Sunday. Os the accidents, 744 involved seri
ous injuries. State officials had predicted 23 fatalities
and 3,281 accidents during the busy travel days.
Communications officer Ryan Holloway said Post
37 in Dawsonville responded to only two accidents.
Locally, deputies concentrated their efforts on

his brother, Merrill J. Leary.

Kieffer made a motion to authorize the program
manager to move forward with the SPLOST 4 needs
list with the changes as presented. Bowen provided
the second, and Jenkins also voted for the motion.
Commissioner Anderson abstained, and
Commissioner Lamar Suddeth was absent.
Jenkins said he wanted to emphasize that the
Georgia DOT has not authorized funding for the col
lector roads.
In other news, Bowen asked Staff Counsel Ed
Ledford to draw up a shopping cart ordinance.
“Those things are aggravating,” said Bowen, with a
smile. He reported his vehicle had been damaged by
a shopping cart. He also said Kroger at Lakeland
Plaza does an excellent job of policing its carts.
Holiday traffic update
Sunday when many people headed home on the
highways.
The Sheriff’s Office responded to 951 calls over
the holiday period. They made 10 arrests for driving
under the influence and 52 total arrests.
They investigated 22 automobile accidents, but
none involved life-threatening injuries.
“Overall, it was fairly quiet,” said Sheriff’s office
spokeswoman Karleen Chalker.
