DOR announces list of undelivered refunds
The Georgia Department of
Revenue (DOR) has released its
annual list of undelivered refund
checks with the goal of locating
taxpayers whose 1998 State of
Georgia income tax refund check
-for the 1997 tax year - has been
returned marked undeliverable by
the U. S. Postal Service.
'Comprising 1,297 checks, the
aggregate amount totals
$187,136.85, with the largest
worth $5,930, and the smallest
sl. When compared to the 2.3
million income tax refund checks
the DOR mails annually, this
means that more than 99.5 per
cent of all income tax refund
checks for tax year 1997 were
received successfully by Georgia
taxpayers.
DOR Commissioner T. Jerry
Jackson has requested that news

Miller dedicates 95,000 acres as heritage preserves
Governor Miller today signed
Executive orders dedicating
more than 95,000 acres of new
land at 82 sites as Heritage
Preserves, thus ensuring that
these state parks, historic sites,
wildlife management lands and
•- natural areas will be available to
' present and future generations
for a wide variety of recreational
activities and conservation pur
poses. The Board of Natural
Resources recommended that
these areas be dedicated as
Heritage Preserves at its October
21 meeting.
“Among the proudest accom
plishments of my administration
is the conservation of more than
120,000 acres of parks, wildlife
lands and other critical areas
under the Preservation 2000 and
River Care 2000 programs,” said
Governor Miller. “I have already
dedicated some of these lands as
Heritage Preserves. As I reach
the end of my term as Governor,
I feel it is important to ensure
that the remaining lands also be
dedicated for public enjoyment
and for protection of their natur
al, historic or recreational val
ues.”
Governor Miller made his
announcement while receiving
The Georgia Conservancy’s
Distinguished Conservationist
Award for 1998. “The Georgia
Copservancy has made important
contributions to conservation
since its very beginning,” noted
Governor Miller. “One of these
was convincing the state to
establish Sweetwater Creek State
;Park. It gives me great pleasure

payer names and hometowns to
expedite claims. For security rea
sons, taxpayer addresses are not
included.
“Under Georgia law, persons
entitled to these returned refund
checks must claim them within
90 days after publication of the
list,” Jackson said. “The refunds
cannot be made to taxpayers after
the 90-day period expires unless
formal application is made to the
Department of Revenue.”
To obtain their refund check,
taxpayers whose names appear
on the following list must com
municate in writing by sending a
letter to the Georgia Department
of Revenue, P.O. Box 38027,
Atlanta, Ga. 30334-0027. The
letter must include the social
security number(s) and signa
ture(s) as shown on the 1997 tax
return. Taxpayers who have
questions or need additional
this evening to dedicate new
facilities at this park in memory
of Carolyn Boyd Hatcher.
Carolyn’s leadership carried The
Georgia Conservancy into urban
planning and other timely issues.
She had an unrivaled ability to
bridge opposing points of view
and to lead conservation dia
logue into new and fruitful areas.
It seems most appropriate to
name the Carolyn Boyd Hatcher
Bridge and Trail at Sweetwater
Creek Park in her honor.”
Under the provisions of the
Georgia Heritage Trust Act of
1975, the Governor may dedicate
as Heritage Preserves any state
owned properties that are man
aged by the Department of
Natural Resources and which the
Board of Natural Resources
identifies as having significant
natural, historic or cultural val
ues. The Georgia Heritage Trust
Act gives the Governor authority
to establish authorized uses of
the properties which can be
changed only after broad public
review and approval by the
General Assembly. The Heritage
Preserve dedication establishes
primary and secondary manage
ment objectives for these proper
ties which, depending on the
specific site, may include
wildlife habitat management,
hunting, fishing, birding, scien
tific research, nature observa
tion, outdoor recreation, historic
preservation, education, hiking,
camping, picnicking, boating
and similar uses. The following
properties have been newly dedi
cated as Heritage Preserves:
