Relay for Life focued on cancer awareness
By Plana Buntln
American Cancer Society volunteer
We all are looking forward to a
new year with new beginnings.
One area which is always
important to everyone is our
health. We are beginning to
strive more and more to find out
how to maintain good health
and what to do if we need med
ical assistance for a serious ill
ness or disease.
A woman’s health is an issue
which has made tremendous
strides - not only in the past
year, but, in particular the last
decade. This is due in part to
women speaking up for atten
tion to be made to health issues
which affect women as well as
men. In the not so long ago
past, many diseases and illness
es which affect women just had
not been researched or even
spoken about enough.
But, times and issues are
changing. A woman’s health is
very important for many differ
ent reasons. Thanks to modern
state of the art medical diagno
sis and treatments many more
women’s lives are being saved.
Much of the attention on
women’s health is due to pio
neers who have stood up to the
public to draw attention to the
needs in women’s health issues.
One of these brave “pioneers”
is Shirley Miller, the First Lady
Pet of the Week
Great dog ready for a new home
My name is Chester. I am a year-old male Pit
Bull and Labrador Retriever mixed breed dog. I
have a shiny black coat with a white spot on my
chest. I will make a great family pet because I
have a wonderful personality. I get along well
with kids, cats and other dogs. I absolutely love
people. I am a 60 pound lap dog. I am completely
housebroken, crate-trained and I walk well on a
leash. I like to ride in the car and I behave in the
bathtub. I am doing well in obedience training. I
need to live indoors. I am already neutered and
current on all of my vet care. My adoption fee is
S2OO. Please call my foster mom and dad, Eileen
and Allen, at (770) 886-5392 to make an appoint
ment to meet me.
Please call Joyce Richert, Adoption Chairman,
at (770) 889-1365 for information on other avail
able dogs and cats. Foster homes are desperately
needed until an animal shelter can be built. If you
find an adoptable stray and you can foster until a
suitable home is found, the Humane Society will
assist you. Contact Joyce before you take the ani
mal to a veterinarian.
Pet adoptions are held on the first and third
Saturday of every month at the Wachovia Bank in
Lakeland Plaza and at Noah’s Ark in Cumming
from 1-4 p.m. Every fourth Sunday, adoptions are
held at Pets Mart at North Point Mall in
Alpharetta from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Cats and kit
tens are available at Pet Place and Noah’s Ark in
Cumming.
Recycle bins are located on Hutchinson Road
across from Pet Place and on Old Atlanta Road
near the K-Mart Garden Center in Cumming.
The Humane Society of Forsyth County is not
funded by local or state government. It is run
completely by unpaid volunteers. Monthly meet
ings are held at 7 p.m. on the third Thursday of
every month at the Sawnee Center. Please call
Duane Hattaway, President, at (770) 667-0681 to
volunteer. Individual and corporate contributions
