Sheriff’s office incident report summary
Schools are locked down
A routine traffic stop led school
officials to believe an aimed fugitive
was on the run near Vickery Creek
Middle School the morning of Jan. 5.
After a seven-hour search, Cumming
resident Michael Meehan, 23, was
arrested and charged with attempting
to elude a police officer, reckless dri
ving and having no proof of insur
ance. Authorities said he was not
armed.
The scare began after a deputy
traveling south on Mullinax Road
attempted to pull over a white 1994
Ford Explorer for speeding past him
in the opposite direction at 8:30 a.m.
The deputy lost sight of the vehicle
when it turned into Dressage subdivi
sion, which sits on Post Road near
the school. The officer later found the
vehicle abandoned between two
houses in the subdivision, with the
engine still running. Meehan fled on
foot, but left his driver’s license and
checkbook inside the vehicle. The
search ended at 3 p.m., when
Meehan walked out of the woods and
told officers he was cold and hungry.
Deputies took him to Baptist North
Hospital for evaluation, then trans
ported him to the Forsyth County jail.
The incident led to the lockdown
of three schools in the vicinity of the
chase. Vickery Creek Middle,
Vickery Creek Elementary and
Midway Elementary schools were
notified of the situation by the
Sheriff’s Office. At the time, it was
not known whether Meehan was
armed. In response, the schools
enacted a practiced Emergency
Preparedness Plan. During a lock
down event, students are not permit
ted to leave classrooms; doors and
windows remain locked and are not
opened to anyone, under any circum
stances; and windows without shades
are covered with butcher paper to
prevent outsiders from peering in.
According to school safety coordina
tor David Adams, students and facul
ty are educated on a series of cues
which let them know there is an
emergency situation at hand.
“Kids know enough to get into a
room as quickly as possible and get
locked down when they hear the
safety cues,” Adams said.
Bomb threat left
Officials at Phillips & Brooks
Gladwin Inc. returned to work on
Monday to find a bomb threat had
been left on the company’s voice
mail. Investigators said the voice was
distorted and the caller appeared to
be reading from a prepared script.
Company spokesman James
Chiavetta and investigators decided
not to evacuate the building after fail
ing to find anything suspicious inside.
According to the voice mail system,
the message was left at 5:26 a.m. on
Jan. 4. A microcassette of the recod
ing was turned over to the Criminal
Investigation Department.
Telephones booths are manufactured
at the business located off Redi Road.
Mail discarded in street
Mail was taken from the mailbox
es of a number of Shaffer Road resi
dents and thrown onto the street
between Jan. 2-3. A resident said he
was not aware if any mail was stolen,
but he reported a few of his neigh
bor’s mailboxes were knocked down.

Toshiba laptop computer worth
$25,000 was stolen from the
Bluegrass Pkwy, business between
Dec. 24 and Jan. 4. A company

tains classified software, aid Boeing
owns the unit through a government

Manufacturing test manager
Robert Hunt provided investigators
with a computer printout of all peo
ple who had been in the hi-tech area
where the computer was last seen. A
crime scene technician dusted the
area for prints.

tures and tools were stolen from a Kit
Fox Drive home between Jan. 2-3.

Developments, a Kennesaw business.
Among the missing items are faucets,
ceiling fans, spot lights, toilet seats,
drills and saws. Investigators found
no fingerprints or any signs of forced
entry into the residence.
Stolen vehicle found
Investigators are searching for the
person who attempted to bum a white
1991 Ford Probe, which was stolen
out of Cobb County earlier in the
year. A resident found the vehicle
parked at the entrance to Mount
Tabor Baptist Church at 11:30 p in.
on TUesday. He did not report seeing
anyone near the car at the time. A
deputy said the car smelled like gaso
line and the inside had been burned.
Road hazard created
Deputies responded to an
Alpharetta gas station after a sprin
kler system began spraying water
onto the roadway shortly after 1 a.m.
on Jan. 6. Workers from the county’s
road department removed some ice
from the road shortly after the spill.
The on-duty clerk at the Atlanta
Hwy. Texaco said she did not know
how to turn the water off, but said it
only came on at night. She spoke to a
manager who also did not know how
to operate the automatic system. The
deputy told the clerk her manager
needed to take care of the problem
because the frozen water created a
road hazard.
