Veteran blood donor encourages others to do it for life j

“Blood is a life force,” said
volunteer blood donor Lloyd
; Compton. “It is a fact that if
you lose blood, you’ll die - no
doubt about it. There are people
out there with leukefnia, hemo
philia and things like that who
couldn’t live life without blood
donations.”
In the midst of all of the con
tinuing blood supply confusion,
Compton and other volunteer
donors have done their part to
save a life. Compton’s “career”
as a blood donor extends far
beyond the occasional donation,
-however, and with his 12-plus
gallons of blood donated
through pheresis and whole
blood donation, there are many
, citizens who have been able to
“live life to the fullest.”

soldier are among some of his
more powerful memories.
According to Compton, a
phrase that made an impact on
him came during a tour of duty
when the numerous climate
shifts he and his fellow soldiers
endured caused him to come
down with a cold. A fellow sol
dier needed B-negative blood,
and despite his cold, he
responded to the need after
remembering the statement, “A
man can get over a cold, but he
can’t live without blood.”
Other memories, such as that
of donating to a child suffering
from leukemia and actually
being able to meet the child
whom he helped, have made all
of the difference.
For the past nine years,
Compton has been mainly a
pheresis donor, a process in
which blood is taken from a
vein in the arm and separated
into platelets, components that
aid in blood clotting. The por
tion of the blood that is not
composed of platelets is then
combined with saline and
returned to the body of the
donor. This process has become
quite useful to the Red Cross,
and the process is able to be
repeated more often than whole
blood donation, in which a sin
gle donor can give blood only
every 56 days.
“Everyone needs to give back
just a little to their community,”
said Compton. His donations
qualify for assistance.
Payments will be made in late
January.
The final date to apply for
LAP assistance has been
extended from Jan. 8 to Feb. 5.
Late-filed applications under
this program will not be accept

have actually become a part of
the “insurance policy” outlook
that he carries about the value
of blood donation. Compton
donates, like many others, with
the knowledge that the more
donations that take place, the
more likely it is that blood will
be there if needed.
According to Steve Haynes,
manager of the Northeast
Georgia Community Blood
Center, the need for blood is
constant and volunteer blood
donors contribute nearly all the
blood used for patient care in
the United States.
“If all who are eligible to
donate would do so on a regular
basis,” Haynes said, “then
blood needs could be met and
shortages could become a thing
of the past.”
Only 5 percent of eligible
Americans donate blood.
Blood never goes to waste,
and the process is safe, easy
and harmless, as new blood can
always be made.
“The more people we can get
to donate, the better off every
one is going to be,” said
Compton.
With a “Critical Blood
Shortage” still in place, the
American Red Cross is continu
ing its appeal for blood dona
tions. Though the situation is
slowly improving, the threat of
an absence of necessary blood
is still a major one. Additional
