teacher resources, I came
across an activity called “Meet
The Delegates Day.” To start
the activity, each student chose
a delegate and did research
using the Internet, Encarta and
other resources from the media
center. A date was set for the
students to complete their
reports and to present it to the
class in costume, as if they
were the delegate.
While students were working
on their research, excitement
began to build. Students were
surprised to find out that many
of the delegates had faced
tragedies, made noble contribu
tions, and even caused scan
dals. One of my students found
SPOTLIGHT ON READING
Coal Mountain Elementary
During the month of December all fifth
grade students at Coal Mountain
Elementary wrote and illustrated books
for first grade students. Fifth graders
worked very hard to complete these
books which were made with a special
touch for each first grader. Pictured left,
fifth grader Allison Schwimer reads to
first graders Nicole Bader and Matthew
Chambers. Right (l-r) Ashleigh
Cheyney, Abby Huntley, Lauren Zuber
and Lauran Head share their books.
Mashbum Elementary
Over 100 student and family members turned out for
Family Reading Night at Mashburn Elementary
School’s Media Center on Nov. 18. Children, parents
and even grandparents were spread out in the media
center, and up and down school hallways. Each student
present received a bookmark from the character ‘The
Cat in the Hat,” portrayed by teacher Sonya Gilliam
(left). After each family completed their book, they were
able to take an Accelerated Reader test on that book in
the school’s computer lab. Mashburn began using
Accelerated Reader in spring of last year. Family
Reading Night enabled parents to see first hand how
the program motivates their children to become better
readers. Far left, Robert and Rachel Hewlett listen to a
book read by their father, Jeff Hewlett, in the Bear’s
Den story corner. Right, student Jeffrey Powell shares
a book with his parents and younger brother.
out that William Blount, a dele
gate from North Carolina, sent
rough drafts of the Constitution
back home in hopes to capital
ize on land deals. As a result,
William Blount was impeached
from his position in govern
ment. Students also learned
that not all the delegates signed
the Constitution.
Students not only learned a
great deal about the delegate
they researched, but they
learned about other delegates
