Local Boy Scouts achieve 14th
National Quality Council award
The Northeast Georgia Council,
Boy Scouts of America, recently
earned the National Quality
Council Award for the 14th con
secutive year.
This distinction is one that
fewer than 50 percent of all Boy
Scout programs receive and only
3 percent of the Boy Scout
Councils in the South have
achieved for 14 consecutive
years.
To earn the award, a Boy Scout
operation must have balanced
growth in all program levels, a
balanced budget, an active
endowment committee, an updat
ed long-range plan and must
secure the appropriate number of
volunteers to operate the
Scouting program.
The Northeast Georgia Council
serves 26 counties in Georgia
with 19,300 youth members and
currently is the largest youth pro
gram in the northeast Georgia
region. More than 6,000 adult
volunteers are registered as lead
ers in the Boy Scout program.
More than 400 organizations in
northeast Georgia utilize the Boy
Recreation Dept. The instructor will
be Skip Runtd. For information on
lessons, call (770) 998-4626.

Scout program involving youth

developing character, teaching
citizenship and emphasizing per
sonal and physical fitness.
“This is one of the finest
Scouting programs in America. It
is a tribute to the many caring
volunteers who work with our
youth every week and our strong
executive board members who
work daily in the community
opening doors and being good
stewards with the operating bud
get,” said Tim Cooper, scout
executive for the Northeast
Georgia Council.
In 1998, the local Scouting pro
gram documented that approxi
mately 55 percent of the youth
involved came from low-to medi
um-low-income homes, while the
Operation First Class program
serving minorities has undergone
a 95 percent growth.
