Castleberry
havests a
huge buck
in Forsyth
By Jim RHey
Staff Writer
November 28th was a great
day for Seth Castleberry, as he
harvested a mature 120-class
buck right here in Forsyth
County.
Castleberry had been on his
stand all morning, and had seen
six does, but no bucks. About
10:45 a.m. he got down and saw
a doe that was, “acting real
funny.”
“I knew then that something
was going to happen,” he said.
Just then the buck walked out
and Castleberry made his shot
count on the 10-pointer.
Currently, the rack is in the
60-day drying period required
before any deer is officially
scored. However, Castleberry
has showed the rack to the
Department of Natural
Resources, who said that it
stands to make the top-ten list
of Forsyth County bucks ever
harvested.
North Bth-grade girls win last-second
thriller, then suffer loss to Dawson
By Jonathan Hamilton and
Stephen Underwood
Sports Staff
After an amazing finish gave
them their third straight victory
last week, the North Forsyth Lady
Wildcat Bth-grade team was final
ly beaten Wednesday by Dawson
- County.
Not that the defeat erased the
memory of the stirring triumph
six days before, though.
Otwell game
The Lady Cats nearly lost a 24-
18 lead in the final quarter, but a
stunning last-second basket by
Amanda Little gave North a 28-26
victory.
The winners’ record improved to
3-4 with the win.
Little had missed two free
throws with 10 seconds left and
her team trailing, 26-25. Then
North’s Abbey Nix had an “inten
tional” foul called on her, but
Wildcat boys use best game of season to
top Otwell, then fall to visiting Tigers
By Jonathan Hamilton
Sports Writer
In a game that had enough
excitement to last a season, the
North Forsyth Bth-grade boys
.. basketball team dropped a
heart-breaker 31-30 to the
Dawson Tigers Wednesday
afternoon at home.
For the visitors the triumph
eased the memory of a bitter
loss to the North on their home
turf last month.
But the hosts also still had the
memory of a smashing all
around game against Otwell last
week, a 55-25 victory.
Dawson game
Tim Strickland led the way
• offensively against Dawson
with 14 points. Jason
Castleberry was a dominant
force under the basket at both
ends of the floor.
The home team held a slim 7-6
advantage after one quarter as
both teams handcuffed each
other on offense with stifling
“D”.
A harbinger of the fourth
" quarter fate that was awaiting
the Wildcats may have come
■ right before the half, when the
Tigers hit a three-point bomb to
shave North’s lead to 14-12.
In the second half, the game
was a tough battle with Dawson
gaining a one-point advantage
going into the final quarter.
The host team refused to quit
as Strickland drove down the
lane late in the quarter to hit the

Otwell’s Sarah Potter missed two
from the stripe, as well.
Otwell still had the inbounds
pass with seven seconds left, but
turned it over.
Moments later, the ball was in
Little’s hands and she fired up the
winner from the top of the key to
touch off a wild celebration.
“It was amazing,” said North
head coach Brandi Helms. “In the
locker room Amanda said that
God was the one who did it, that
when she was shooting her free
throws she prayed to God that it
didn’t matter if she made the free
throws as long as the game came
out good in the end.”
“When Amanda said that, I was
more pleased with the comment
than winning the game,” she
added. “This team has come a
long way.”
Helms also said Kate Hobgood
and Meghan Hilliard were strong
on the boards. “We won because
we played together and never
gave up.”
running jumper, giving the
Wildcats a 30-29 advantage.
Jud Baker came up strong for
North, grabbing several
rebounds in the waning minutes
of the game.
But the guests grabbed the
lead with 14 seconds remaining
in regulation, as leading scorer
Ethan Hinson drove through
traffic and hit the go-ahead
bucket.
To their credit, the Wildcats
didn’t quit in the final seconds.
They calmly inbounded the ball
but couldn’t get their final shot
to go in.
Otwell game
“It was definitely our most
complete game of the year,”
said Wildcat Bth-grade head
coach Darla Light. “Every facet
of our game was solid. I was
very pleased.”
Who wouldn’t be?
In North’s 55-25 victory, the
Wildcats only committed seven
turnovers while grabbing a stag
gering 51 rebounds on the
night.
Every player on the team saw
game action and scored, the
first time that has happened this
season.
On defense, North was credit
ed with an amazing 16 steals for
the game.
Strickland and Baker keyed
the offensive effort with 13 and
12 points respectively.
Castleberry was the prime
force on the boards sweeping
down 10 rebounds.
Paige Roper led the way with 14
points and Hobgood added seven
and Little five.
Dawson game
The Lady Tigers proved to be
unruly guests Wednesday, taking
a 29-10 triumph.
“Our defense was solid,” said
Helms. “They are a very good
team. On the positive side we
were able to get everyone some
playing time tonight.”
The visitors opened the game
with their suffocating full-court
press. The Lady Wildcats trailed
10-4 after one quarter of play.
They tried to get back in the game
but just couldn’t develop a
rhythm, going to the locker room
down, 16-6.
“We were missing several play
ers due to illness,” said Helms.
“We should have everyone back
in time for Thursday’s game.”
Hilliard was the leading scorer
for North with six points.
