STORMS from 1A
preparation that could save the lives of fami
lies everywhere. They advise that the most
basic storm preparedness tips begin with
deciding on a safe place to seek shelter dur
ing intense weather, such as a central loca
tion with no windows, skylights or glass
doors, preferably a basement area. Keeping
abreast of local weather reports is also an
excellent method of preparation.
In a lightning storm, the Red
Cross advises to be aware of
changing conditions, such as dark
ening skies, increasing wind and
actual light flash. It is important to
remember that if thunder can be
heard, the storm is close enough to
produce a lightning strike, and safe
shelter should be sought.
The Red Cross also advises that
in the event of an actual storm, a
car or building can be used for
shelter, providing that the car is not
convertible and all windows are
rolled up. Telephone lines and
metal piping are electricity conduc
tors, so all appliances need to be
unplugged. During a storm, it is
advisable to refrain from using
electrical appliances or telephones,
but leaving electric lights on does
hot increase chances of a home
• being struck. Running water could
be a potentially dangerous situa
tion, and the air conditioner needs
to be turned off as well. Blinds and
shades need to be drawn as well to
prevent harm in the event that a
’ window breaks.
If caught outside, the Red Cross
* advises to take shelter under short
er trees if caught in a forest sce
nario, and if a storm approaches on
water, it is advised that boaters get
to land immediately. The best
.places to seek shelter out of doors
’•is to go to low-lying, open places
away from trees, poles and metallic
objects. Squatting low on the
ground is the best way to become a
“small target,” and crunching into a
ball with head tucked makes for a
smaller area than does lying flat on
■ the ground.
■ The Red Cross also advises that
.‘once a storm passes, listen for
radio instructions and stay away
from damaged areas. If a victim of
lightning-strike is found, they carry
no electrical charge and can be
handled safely, but the first course
of action is to call 911 immediate
ly. Bums may exist both where the
strike occurred and where it left the
body, so both places should be
checked, as lightning strikes can
; result in nervous system damage,
broken bones, loss of hearing and
sight and possibly death.
Though storm situations may be
• drastic, the American Red Cross
" offers disaster relief training that
a may be especially useful during the
•’ upcoming severe weather months.

Refreshments will be served.
Volunteers will be able to complete the
orientation course and continue to

and necessary forms for a disaster
scene and a beeper to notify volunteers
of events in which their service may be
