Q: You recently reported that
Whoopi Goldberg said the celebri

given the answers to the questions.
That hardly seems fair, and I am
jpset to hear that. -Karen Hanna via

A: Thanks for writing, Karen,
because I need to set the record
straight. My original answer echoed
emarks Goldberg made at a press
luncheon last summer, several

EDUCATION TODAY
by TERESA THORNE
SCIENTISTS IN CONGRESS:
Rush Holt, a newly-elected member
of Congress from New Jersey’s 12th
Congressional District, makes no
excuses for the fact that he intends
to keep his campaign promise to
wake Congress up to the impor
tance of science in the education of
the nation’s young people.
There are two physicists in
Congress: Dr, Holt, a Democrat, is
one, and Dr. Vernon J. Ehlers, a
Republican from Michigan, is the
other.
Holt says he looks forward to a
bipartisan effort by Ehlers and him
self to raise the consciousness of
their congressional colleagues to
work to reform science education,
Holt was quoted in the New York
Times, as saying, “Science educa
tion should not just be for future
scientists, but for all kids. We
should get away from this idea that
in 10th grade you do biology, in
11th, chemistry, and if you stick it
out long enough, you do physics in
the 12th. It should be all mixed up.
And we should be teaching science
in away that’s integrated with other
disciplines - literature, social stud
ies.”
Asked how he became interested

began in elementary school with a
book on dinosaurs and fossils. His
mother was a biology teacher with a
master’s in zoology, and he began
reading her books. He also recalls
playing around with the chemicals
in her school lab. “I didn’t know at
the time how dangerous it was to
play with mercury. But it sure was
fun.”
TEST OR NOT TO TEST: Every
so often, a movement ripples
through the educational community
that involves banning most tests in
the classroom. The proponents say
testing is counterproductive and
creates negative attitudes toward
education. The fact is, negative atti
tudes usually derive from poor
preparation for testing, rather than
from the tests themselves. Teachers
should stress the importance of
study and hard work for academic
success in the same way coaches
encourage training for athletic
events.

COOPERATIVE PIZZA-MAK
ING GAME...
Arrange ingredients for your
pizza on a table or counter. Prepare
pizza in teams of two. The fun
begins when the person responsible
for assembling a pizza covers his
eyes completely with a scarf or win
ter headband. The other person in
the team gives directions. (Kids like
to play this role!)
Instruct the pizza maker to roll
out the dough, then hand him the
ingredients, beginning with the
tomato sauce. Ask him to brush on
the sauce, then continue by arrang
ing and sprinkling toppings one by
one. Since this is a cooperative
effort, the person giving instructions
should guide die pizza maker ver
bally as he works. Don't get the
anchovies mixed up with thqf beese!
