EARTH: FINAL CONFLICT
Everyone old is new again at
Health & Nutrition
some people can overeat and stay
slim, while others gain weight. There
were no significant health or metabo
lism differences reported among the
participants.
The researchers found those
whose weight remained constant
were burning off calories by fidget
ing after a meal, often without being
aware of it. Some would shift posi
tions at their work stations a few
times. They might cross and recross
their legs. They might sit up
straighter to maintain their posture.
Some would start to stretch or go to
the water fountain or toilets. It
absorbed more quickly into the rice mix

food expats compared them.
I GRAINS OF TRUTH: The old-fash
i ioned way won out The risotto made in
a saucepan turned out creamiest with
rice grains that were separate and slight
ly firm, never gluey or dry. The skillet
worked well too, but didn’t save any
time. The pressure cooker produced the
most amazing results: It took just 13 min
utes total, and the only downside was that
the grains seemed a little less plump-not
too high a price to pay to skip all that stir

STAR TREK: DEEP SPACE
NINE
When Ferengi leader Zek (guest

(Michael Dorn), the Alliance leader in
the mirror world, has the cloaking
device and devious plans for it. Colm

appears that overeating, in some peo
ple, touches off the fidgeting behav
ior. The participants in the study who
gained weight were largely sedentary
after eating.
While it’s still important to exer
cise before eating to raise one’s
metabolism, we now know that activ
ity after eating is also important to
help bum those calories. Those who
are not natural fidgeters should try to
be more active after eating. Take the
stairs instead of an elevator. Move
around the room. Take out the trash,
etc.

On Monday, veteran broadcast journalists Charles Gibson and Connie
Chung host the newest edition of the ABC newsmagazine 20/20, featuring
interviews, feature stories and investigative reports.
Buchman, the author of several
books on health (her most recent is
“The Complete Guide to Natural
Sleep”) has a suggestion to help per
sonalize the typically impersonal
experience of having a doctor’s
receptionist look at us blankly when
we arrive for our appointments. She
suggests we have headshot photos
included in our files. The receptionist
would check the photo on the day of
our appointment, and instead of get
ting a blank look we’d get a smile of
recognition when we report in.
