MOVIE: FAMILY BLESSINGS
Blessings from the family are in
short supply for a 44-year-old woman
(Lynda Carter) in love with her late
son’s 30-year-old best friend (Steven
Eckholdt). One of the most vocal critics
of the relationship is her college-age
daughter (Ari Meyers), who has a crush
on the young man herself. Nina Foch
Ohio: You asked about Jeff
Goldblum. I really don’t know whom
he is attached to now. Everyone
thought he and Laura Dem would
wed. But there was big excitement
during the holidays at a new club on
Vine St. Jeff was playing piano with
a group, and the ladies were going
gaga. He wore a black leather jacket,
black leather pants and a whole new
facial look. His hair was blacker, his
teeth whiter, and he really can play a
wicked piano.
BITS ‘N* PIECES:
Being a movie buff since age 6,1
knew his name. Now I read where
Francis Lederer, a former silent
screen idol, is “99 years young and
living comfortably at his home in the
desert.” What memories he must
have, what stories he can probably
tell ... Now that Prince Edward has
announced his engagement and will
soon be married, all those rumors
about why he was seldom seen with a
girl can stop flying ... Still further on
“Didya know about Leonardo.”
Didya know when Leonardo first
signed on with a talent agency they
wanted him to change his name to
something less ethnic like Lenny
Williams? Wasn’t he the smart one?
... I promised I wouldn’t, but allow
me just to mention - Best Actress,

JUST SHOOT ME
When Nina (Wendie Malick) acts
like a Southern belle to attract a hand
some, conservative senator (guest star
Tom Amandes), she must deliver a per
formance worthy of Vivien Leigh to
keep the charade going. Finch (David
Spade) dreams of big bucks when he
learns Elliott (Enrico Colantoni) has a
valuable ’7os action figure. There’s only
one problem: Elliott stole the toy as a
child, and he wants to give it back.

seem to be shoo-ins ... TV is not my
beat. That is most ably taken care of
by my most esteemed colleague,
Sally Stone, but I must say when Lisa
Mcßee left L.A. to take over “GMA,”
I just knew she couldn’t cut it. She’s
a nice person, pretty and a good news
woman, but that little bit of inde
scribable magic is missing, and that’s
what Diane Sawyer, Katie Cowrie and
all the other successful tube ladies
definitely have ... Roger Moore is no
longer just 007. He was named a
Commander of the Order of the
British Empire by Her Majesty
Queen Elizabeth. (Jeepers! Do you
realize how long this woman has
been on the throne?!?)... No screen
writer could do better than the sce
nario that has been unfolding in
America ... Aside to Jennifer H. of
Las Vegas, Nevada: Yes. I guess you
have a point. Cameron Diaz and Meg
Ryan are kind of alike, but I won’t go
as far as you do to say they could be
sisters ... Joan Fontaine calling from
her home in Carmel, Calif., to tell me
how much she loved “Elizabeth” and
“Shakespeare in Love.” Interesting,
because if those two films had been
made when she was a big star, she
could have played both the
Blanchette and Paltrow roles. She
was the same type, and the same cal
iber actress.. •_
