Cleaning tips for neckties, leather
. . Neckties are an important accesso
ry-in a man’s wardrobe; therefore,
they require the same care as many
xgher type of wearing apparel.
.Because accidents can and will hap
pen, it is important that, as a con
sumer, you know how to care for
your neckties properly.
- Cleaning a necktie presents chal-
lenges even to the more experienced drycleaner. The
fabric is often a multi-colored print that is usually color
fast to drycleaning but not to water. As a result, stain
removal may involve carefully testing each color for col
orfastness. If the dyes bleed too easily, a cleaner may
.choose not to attempt removal of stains that are not
.removed in drycleaning.
. Several layers are used to construct a necktie and a
cleaner may need to take the tie apart in order to remove
a stain. Otherwise, moisture may be retained in the
thicker, interfaced areas, which may contribute to dye
Heeding.
■ Because the fabric is usually cut on the bias, neckties
may also be susceptible to distortion during wear and
cleaning. However, drycleaners have a variety of special
tools and techniques that may be used to return the
necktie to a new appearance.
■lt is important to use caution when attempting to
remove stains on neckties at home. Remember to blot
the stain, do not rub. Rubbing the area while damp may
break the surface yams, resulting in color loss that may
not become apparent until after cleaning. Remember
that the serviceability and cleanability of the tie depends
on the materia] used in its construction. If the fabric or
dyes cannot withstand normal use or care, then service
ability becomes very limited.

isfaction. When properly cared for, a
good quality leather garment or acces
sory should improve with age and last
for a very long time. Here are 11 gar
ment care guidelines you can use to
help your items provide you with many
years of good service.
Store the garment on a broad hanger,
not a wire one. Never store a leather
garment in a plastic garment bag.
If the garment becomes wet, air dry it naturally. Avoid
heat and humidity.
Let the garment hang out to remove wrinkles. If you
must iron a leather garment, let it dry first When iron
ing, cover the garment with a heavy paper and use your
iron’s lowest setting with no steam.
Remove the garment before using perfumes or hair
sprays. Never apply pins, tape or adhesive badges, such
as name tags, to a leather garment
Fix hems by using a small amount of robber cement
Better yet, see a professional leather cleaner for all
repairs to your garments.
Wipe away dust and dirt with a soft, dry sponge or
cloth. Only use conditioners and cleaners made specifi
cally for leather garments. Be sure the product is suit
able for leather, suede, nubuck or shearing before apply
ing. When your garment needs an all-over cleaning,
send it to a professional leather cleaner.
Because a slight variation of color and texture can
occur as a natural result of the cleaning process, always
clean matching garments, such as a jacket-and-skirt
combination, at the same time. Natural marks and wrin
kles can become more apparent after cleaning. While a
garment may shrink slightly, it will stretch again with
water.
Professional leather cleaners apply and sell water- and
stain-repellent products for leather garments. If you wish
to do the process at home, apply these products immedi
ately after purchase to get the best results.

Abby
By Abiqal Van Buren
Universal Press Syndicate
DEAR ABBY: I just finished reading a letter in your
column from Tom Lynch of Cedar Rapids, lowa. Tom
said that if we make a law against using cell phones
while driving, then other laws might be enacted such as,
“No tuning the radio while driving,” “No looking at your
passenger during conversation while driving,” “No
adjusting the temperature while driving,” and “No dri
ving without eight hours of sleep.”
He also said, ‘We’ll always have tragic accidents ... the
potential loss of freedom is much more tragic.”
I am outraged! I’m 13. My mother was killed in a car
accident a year ago, along with my stepbrother. If not lis
tening to the car radio, not having my dad look at me
while driving, being cold or hot in the car, or having my
dad say he can’t drive me to the mall because he hasn't
had eight hours of sleep could bring my mom back, I’d
forfeit my “freedoms” in a heartbeat! These things are a
small price to pay compared to living without my mother
and stepbrother because of someone’s carelessness.
Tom get a life!
CHRISTY GRIFFITH,
PALM HARBOR, FLA.
DEAR CHRISTY: For one so young, you have writ
ten a powerful letter. Please accept my deepest sympathy
on the tragic loss of your beloved mother and stepbrother.
Although nothing will bring them back, perhaps your let
ter will remind motorists that their cars are powerful
machines, capable of inflicting the most severe damage if
they are not used with care and consideration for others.

DEAR ABBY: If you’re not up to here with
responses to “Dad, the Morning Rooster,” pleasfc
consider my comments for publication.
“Dad’s” son could have been me when I wafc
young. Alarm clocks never had the desired effect on
me. I was called lazy, and my guidance counselor
said I lacked motivation. My teachers branded me a
slacker. I slept on the bus, slept in class, etc,,
although I tested off the charts for aptitude and
intelligence. Because of my sleep problems, I barely
graduated from high school and had an extremely
difficult time in college. My employers were, even
less understanding of my difficulty than my teach
ers. '• .• •
Abby, when my wife complained about my sleepi
ness and difficulty in waking up, I finally consulted
a doctor. Guess what, folks! I do not get restorative
sleep. I have a condition called sleep apnea that pre
vents the sleep state from rejuvenating me.
I am scheduled for a surgical procedure that may
relieve me of this affliction, and I’m excited beyond
words. “Dad” should have his son evaluated at a
sleep disorder clinic, before the relationship is
strained beyond repair.

DEAR WAITING: Sleep apnea can, indeed, inter
fere with restorative sleep, leaving one still in need
of rest when the sun comes up in the morning.
Perhaps the young man does suffer from this disor
der and would benefit from being evaluated by a
sleep disorder specialist. Thanks for suggesting it
