When Carolyn Gravitt passed away, the City of Cumming put together a poem in tribute to her
memory with her favorite picture of her and her husband, Mayor Ford Gravitt.
A tribute to the memory of
Carolyn Gravitt: First Lady
of Cumming for 27 years
By Cheryl Vaughn
Features Writer
There are, in every community,
individuals who deserve mention
but rarely seek it. Far too busy with
the comings and goings of daily liv
ing, they do not see anything extra
ordinary in their natural code of
community service, absolute dedi
cation to family and concern for
humanity.
Carolyn Gravitt lived 60 years
without fanfare, taking care of her
family, contributing her best to her
community. In the short span of 10
months, cancer stole her vitality and
claimed her life last year, but those
who remember her understand that
Gravitt continues to live strong in
this community through her family
and those whose lives she touched.
I think Carolyn
would like to have
her legacy say she
loveaherkids and
her grandkids...
“I think Carolyn would like to
have her legacy say she loved her
kids and her grandkids and the peo
ple around her,” says her husband,
Cumming Mayor Ford Gravitt, qui
etly. He is weathering all of the
“firsts” that follow the passing of a
loved one - the first Christmas
without her, the first New Year’s,
the first anniversary of the discov
ery of her illness - and his move
ments are slow and steeped in grief.

Married for nearly 35 years,
they had served the community
together for more than three
decades.
“She was my partner in busi
ness, my friend, my wife, the moth
er of our three children, the grand
mother of our three grandchildren,”

WOMEN OF FORSYTH
says Gravitt. “I guess you’d call her
the spark in my life that kept me
going, being the positive person she
was. She was the rock that stood
beside me during 33 years in city
government.”
