“She enjoyed doing things for
other people, too,” he says. “She
was always cooking, crocheting
and sewing. She liked to make
bouquets of flowers for people
and loved to have a flower gar
den.”
But her first love, he recalls,
was being a mom.
“She was a special mother
with the kids,” he says. “After our
first child was born, she chose to
stay home and raise our family.
They were always involved with
sports and she would find herself
going in three different directions
all over the county to be with
them all. She was leader of the
Brownie Scout troop and a role
model for young
women. She was
just a fun per
son.”
A longtime
family friend,
Brenda
Swanson, agrees.
“She had a

still hear today

to be for the

that brings me a great peace in
my heart when I think about her,”
she says. “Her children loved her
and respected her and so did I.
She always made you feel like
she was glad to see you.”
Linda Heard, director of
human resources for the City of
Cumming, says Carolyn was “a
one-person campaign committee
for her husband and his programs.
“She wasn’t an out-front per
son, but worked quietly and dili
gently behind the scenes to sup
port and uphold her family and
friends in their endeavors,” she
recalls. “Her joy came in their

Even in sickness, those who
loved her say Carolyn’s spirit was
not diminished.
“She was a true lady with
that,” says her husband. “She
never complained. She was a firm
believer that God has a date on
the calendar for everybody and
that her date had come. Though
we hoped after her surgery in
February that things looked good,
the treatments didn’t work with
her and she just more or less said,
‘lt’s my time.’
“All the doctors and nurses
said they’d never seen a patient
like her, so uplifting,” he adds,
admitting that
adjusting to
life without her
has been diffi
cult.
“It’s hard to
go home at
night,” he con
fesses. “You
don’t plan for
these things
and you never get ready. You
never think when you are young
and get married that this time will
come. I always thought I’d be the

“You do everything you can to
stay busy and the kids and friends
are a tremendous help,” he
acknowledges. “I understand now
why they say grandkids are grand.
But even though you have condo

Carolyn was that way, he says.
“She always cared about what
the future was going to be for the
community, how to improve the
present and how it would be down
the road. She was always there to
do whatever she could.”
She will long be remembered
as Cumming’s First Lady, a fine
mother and true friend.
