Brenda Heard enhancing community
by bringing people together to share

Cumming native Brenda Heard says she believes
people in a community should communicate with each
other.
That’s why, for the past five years, she and her hus
band, Harold, have hosted annual community picnics on
their own property.
“We just love to be with people,” Brenda says. “We
decided people don’t visit like they should anymore, so
we sent out invitations to both old and new residents.
We have a big yard with a lot of trees, and it’s nice to
get together anywhere from June to September.”
Guests bring a covered dish, and the conservation of
community relationships begins.
As members of the Forsyth County Historical
Society, Brenda and Harold have been active in estab
lishing an appreciation for Cumming’s heritage.
“I just love to see everything preserved,” she says.
“We like antiques, and I want to see a lot of old build
ings preserved.” Brenda has helped the Historical
Society by working in the booth at the Cumming
Country Fair and helping establish plans for the walk
ing tour of downtown Cumming.
“It just killed me when they tore down downtown
Cumming - I’m glad they preserved the schoolhouse.”

named to the National Historic Register.
A hairdresser for 32 years, Brenda dropped out of
school at 15 to begin a family and her career. For the
past 14 years, she’s been styling hair at Shear Creations
on Pilgrim Mill Road.
“I love what I’m doing,” she says. “I never get up
and feel like I don’t want to come to work.” Many of
Brenda’s customers have been coming to her for 20
years or more. “Men and women both,” she says.
“Hairdressers are doctors, lawyers and psychologists
all in one,” Brenda says. “A lot of people tell their hair
dressers things they can’t tell their own family.”
The Heards have two sons, Calvin and Jason, both
of whom are married and live in Forsyth County. These
days, you frequently will hear a proud Brenda reporting
on her three granddaughters, Shelby, 8, Sara, 3, and
Cheyenne, 3.
Family is so important to Brenda, it broke her heart
that last Christmas was the first time she couldn't be
near her kids for the special day. Instead, she was with
her husband in the hospital. Harold has been recovering
from the open heart surgery he endured last fall. Brenda
says she’s looking forward to his homecoming so they
can spend more time with family and friends.
“I love to sit on my front porch and wave at every
one who passes by,” she says. “I just love to be with
people.”
